- Conduct daily inspections of construction activities and attend construction meetings
- Conduct wildlife monitoring activities, as required
- Ensure implementation of mitigation measures from project environmental protection plan, permit conditions, and best management practices
- Inspect implemented erosion and sediment control measures and provide recommendations for repair and correction, as needed
- Oversee and direct soils handling activities (e.g., topsoil stripping)
- Develop and implement corrective action plans and mitigation measures for any identified environmental issues or hazards
- Support Canacre’s commitment to safety by participating in safety meetings, following safety policies, and being an advocate for safe work practices in the field
- Act as an environmental lead for the Environment team
- Act as a resource to construction personnel and guide environmental regulations and how they are applied in the field
- Act as a point of contact for the Client and Construction Contractors
- Verify that environmentally sensitive areas are properly marked and flagged before work is started in the area
- Coordinate daily with construction team to discuss upcoming construction activities, potential problem areas, and areas of environmental concern
- Coordinate with construction personnel to provide necessary information and facilitate regular communication among all parties
- Inspect areas of concern and make appropriate recommendations to construction personnel, as required
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly environmental reports, including reports of wildlife sweeps, and environmental incidents
- Review field reports for consistency and accuracy
- Support the preparation of environmental permits, when required
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies, as required
- Perform other duties as required.
Education
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field of study
- Formal leadership training would be considered an asset
- 5-7 years professional experience as a Biologist, Environmental Monitor, Environmental Inspector, Environmental Planner, or related role
- Wildlife experience e.g., at least one field season of demonated experience in nest sweeps or avian surveys
- Experience related to linear projects - pipeline, transmission line and renewable energy construction would be an asset.
- Experienced leading field programs, and coordinating with various field teams
- Experience and knowledge related to other biophysical disciplines, such as wetlands, vegetation, aquatics, etc. would be an asset.
- Designation or certification related to erosion and sediment control, such as CPESC, CESSWI, etc., would be an asset.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills – data collection and interpretation, technical report writing, regulatory permit applications, client communications, etc.
- Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations and best management practices
- Experience developing summary reports related to construction activities and/or compliance status
- Experience with ESRI products, such as ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123 and Field Maps would be an asset
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, prioritizing and decision-making skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with minimal supervision
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated and highly organized with strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to build strong, lasting relationships with key stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Valid Driver’s License, with ability to maintain insurability under the company’s insurance carrier
