Role Overview:McAfee's VPN Engineering team is looking for an experienced and passionate full-time Backend Software Engineer to join the VPN Infrastructure team and help us build and grow our service that is used by millions of people around the world.As apart of this team, you’ll be working closely with fellow backend developers who maintain the backend application that runs McAfee's VPN service. You will be integrated within the VPN Infrastructure team working closely with backend, data & DevOps engineers to create experiences that keep our users secure, private, and more confident online.You will get exposure to building and optimizing software that runs on a network of VPN servers distributed in 50+ countries. We are a small team, so naturally the kind of people who tend to succeed in our team are generalists. You should be comfortable in dabbling with all forms of development, such as occasionally tweaking our CI/CD pipelines, assisting with code reviews of frontend development, assisting in incident & outage management and more.You will be joining a tight-knit team of easy going individuals who like to work hard and have fun together. We are only considering candidates in Canada and are not offering relocation assistance at this time.About the Role:
  • Write clear, concise and well-tested code in Scala, and occasionally in Java or other languages. You don’t have to know all (or any) of these coming in, provided that you can demonstrate that you can learn things quickly.
  • Assist with as well as sometimes lead large projects, architectural changes and feature development required to enable the growth and improvement of the backend applications our VPN service relies on.
  • Implement and maintain the backend API’s used by our clients.
  • Assist peers in the implementation and maintenance of our frontend products (i.e. website & VPN browser extension) and our backend infrastructure services that manage our VPN network.
  • Review product requirements, specifications and technical design documents and provide accurate feedback to ensure that software is written in a testable and supportable fashion.
  • Ensure the privacy and security of our user management services.
  • Collaborate with our connection analytics and censorship circumvention teams to improve our VPN network.
About You:
  • You have 6+ years of experience working with backend technology, and you understand which tools and frameworks to use and why.
  • You have a strong understanding of SQL, and relational database design.
  • You are familiar with functional programming languages, such as Scala or Python.
  • You have experience with AWS (ECS, RDS, Elasticache, S3) and CloudFlare is an asset.
  • You are comfortable designing & working on system level architectural components.
  • You are familiar with the Play Framework, Docker, Terraform, and Redis is a plus.
  • You have demonstrated ownership and pride over your projects and are able to work outside of your usual comfort zone when necessary.
  • You have strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to tailor communication based on the audience (i.e. business vs. technical).
  • You feel right at home in the terminal, comfortable with Linux or macOS.
  • You get bonus points for knowledge of anti-censorship and privacy technologies.
