Job Description:LONGSHORE/STEVEDORING POSITIONS (Casual/On-Call) - Port of St. John's, NLThe St. John's Shipping Association (SJSA) is pleased to be provided stevedoring services by the International Longshoremen's Association, L.S.P.U. Local 1953. The SJSA and the Union have interests in securing the most qualified labour to work in the longshore industry in the Port of St. John's.The demands and highly safety sensitive nature of a career in the longshore industry require a rigorous process for inclusion in the labour pool. The information below is intended to provide persons desirous of a career in the longshore industry an overview of the recruitment, selection, training, and employment in the Port of St. John's.The intent of this hiring is to fill the Casual Labour Pool. While work assignments are on-call, there is an anticipated increase in labour requirements with members of the St. John's Shipping Association.For successful candidates, advancement opportunities exist to become full union members.PROGRESSION SUMMARYThe progression opportunity is as follows:1. Casual (automobile discharge & loading only)2. Temporary Card3. Union MembershipQUALIFICATIONSThe following are required as a condition of consideration for employment in the labour pool.
Graduation from High School or equivalent
Valid Driver's License with 1-year driving experience and acceptable Driver's Abstract
Acceptable Certificate of Conduct
Eligible for Transport Canada Security Clearance
Available to work as needed on short notice with unpredictable hours
Medical Clearance (including pre-employment drug & alcohol screening)
Physical and mental capacity to perform all lashing and related ship work duties of a Longshoreperson
Respect and commitment for safety sensitive work
An obvious desire to work and be available for dispatch as a Longshoreperson
Ability to be trained in the operation of heavy equipment
