The teaching laboratory technicians' team at the department of Chemistry provides essential support to our undergraduate and graduate students, Teaching Assistants, Faculty and Staff. Our priority is to provide support for our teaching laboratories to ensure smooth operation of core teaching operations.About the RoleThis position involves preparing undergraduate laboratories for teaching by making solutions and unknowns, setting up lab equipment, keeping the laboratory organized, doing demonstrations, and assisting lab instructors, students and teaching assistants (TAs) so experiments can be performed smoothly and safely. Prepares materials and equipment for lecture demonstrations and event shows.QualificationsAbility to complete Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certification and relevant Laboratory Safety Training as offered by the University. 3 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.
  • Ability to use a wide range of laboratory equipment (e.g., analytical balances, barometers, centrifuges, manometers, melting point apparatuses, refractometers, rotary evaporators, and ultrasonic cleaner) at an advanced level.
  • Ability to use a wide range of laboratory instruments (e.g., pH meters, UV-visible and Fourier transform IR spectrometers, and gas chromatographs) at an advanced level.
  • Ability to prepare complex reagents, mixtures, and solutions using correct lab techniques (e.g., accuracy in weighing, measuring, and titrating).
  • Ability to adapt, modify, demonstrate and troubleshoot equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access) in at a basic level.
