Join a dedicated team of technical experts committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of Edmonton's built environment. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your deep electrical expertise to complex construction projects that shape our vibrant community.This highly technical position handles specialized reviews of drawings, plans, and onsite inspections for residential and commercial buildings under the Safety Codes Act. You will serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and technical mentorship to other Safety Codes Officers to ensure consistent application of electrical codes and regulations.What will you do?
  • Conduct complex plans examinations and onsite inspections for new construction, renovations, and additions to ensure compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code and City bylaws
  • Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and guidance to Safety Codes Officers, assisting with the resolution of complex construction and enforcement issues
  • Act as a lead inspector or plans examiner on large-scale, unique projects, sharing best practices and methods with the team
  • Grant detailed permits for various stages of construction and ensure all documentation and relevant data are accurately captured in City systems
  • Facilitate the resolution of inconsistencies in code interpretation and address escalated concerns from contractors and developers
  • Collaborate with internal departments and provincial authorities to ensure a cohesive and user-friendly experience when permits are issued
  • Inspect projects for alignment with Occupational Health and Safety standards to maintain a safe working environment for everyone involved
Qualifications
  • Completion of the 12th school grade
  • Journeyman electrician certification recognized in Alberta with 6 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry post-certification OR
  • Electrical Engineering technologist diploma recognized in Canada with 8 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry post-diploma OR
  • Electrical Engineering degree recognized in Canada with 6 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry (at least 1 year post-degree)
AND
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Safety Codes Officer
  • Registered Safety Codes Officer with Electrical Group A certification from the Safety Codes Council in Alberta
Assets:
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring

  • Mastery of standard methods, techniques, materials, and tools employed in the Electrical Worker Trade
  • Expertise in the Safety Codes Act, Canadian Electrical Code, and City Bylaws
  • Precision in analyzing and interpreting complex plans, designs, and legislative contexts
  • Proficiency in identifying hazardous conditions or construction that fails to meet code intent
  • Advanced verbal and written communication to convey technical information and foster collaboration with community partners
  • Leadership in providing technical guidance and sharing knowledge to build team capacity
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and complex files simultaneously
  • Impartiality and transparency in decision-making and the application of safety codes

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Candidates must arrange their own transportation (reimbursed per City policy)

Work Environment:
  • Note: Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • The weekly hours of work are currently under review and may change in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement
  • Works in both indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, and electrical hazards
  • Requires working in confined spaces and/or at heights
  • Physical stamina for strenuous tasks including standing, kneeling, and lifting items up to 50 lbs
