- Conduct complex plans examinations and onsite inspections for new construction, renovations, and additions to ensure compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code and City bylaws
- Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and guidance to Safety Codes Officers, assisting with the resolution of complex construction and enforcement issues
- Act as a lead inspector or plans examiner on large-scale, unique projects, sharing best practices and methods with the team
- Grant detailed permits for various stages of construction and ensure all documentation and relevant data are accurately captured in City systems
- Facilitate the resolution of inconsistencies in code interpretation and address escalated concerns from contractors and developers
- Collaborate with internal departments and provincial authorities to ensure a cohesive and user-friendly experience when permits are issued
- Inspect projects for alignment with Occupational Health and Safety standards to maintain a safe working environment for everyone involved
- Completion of the 12th school grade
- Journeyman electrician certification recognized in Alberta with 6 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry post-certification OR
- Electrical Engineering technologist diploma recognized in Canada with 8 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry post-diploma OR
- Electrical Engineering degree recognized in Canada with 6 years of relevant experience in the building construction industry (at least 1 year post-degree)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Safety Codes Officer
- Registered Safety Codes Officer with Electrical Group A certification from the Safety Codes Council in Alberta
- Experience in coaching and mentoring
- Mastery of standard methods, techniques, materials, and tools employed in the Electrical Worker Trade
- Expertise in the Safety Codes Act, Canadian Electrical Code, and City Bylaws
- Precision in analyzing and interpreting complex plans, designs, and legislative contexts
- Proficiency in identifying hazardous conditions or construction that fails to meet code intent
- Advanced verbal and written communication to convey technical information and foster collaboration with community partners
- Leadership in providing technical guidance and sharing knowledge to build team capacity
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and complex files simultaneously
- Impartiality and transparency in decision-making and the application of safety codes

- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Candidates must arrange their own transportation (reimbursed per City policy)

- Note: Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
- The weekly hours of work are currently under review and may change in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement
- Works in both indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, and electrical hazards
- Requires working in confined spaces and/or at heights
- Physical stamina for strenuous tasks including standing, kneeling, and lifting items up to 50 lbs
- Public-facing role requiring interaction with diverse people in various emotional states
- 33.75 Hours per week: $53.819 - $67.493 (Hourly); $94,815.620 - $118,905.790 (Annually)
- 40 Hours per week: $50.856 - $63.784 (Hourly); $106,187.330 - $133,180.990 (Annually)
