The department provides 24/7 security coverage across the campus, ensuring the protection of students, employees, visitors, and university property. We manage a range of safety initiatives, including emergency response, surveillance, patrolling, incident investigation, and safety education. By fostering a proactive approach to security, the department works closely with local law enforcement and other emergency services to address safety concerns and promote a culture of awareness and preparedness throughout the campus. Security Services is considered an essential service within the University.About the RoleMount Royal University (MRU) is seeking a dedicated and proactive Security Representative to join our Security Services team. This role is essential to safeguarding our community, including staff, students, and visitors, while protecting the university's buildings, grounds, and assets. This position is primarily focused on the Riddell Library and Learning Centre (RLLC) during the Fall and Winter semesters, with broader campus responsibilities during the Spring and Summer semesters. This position reports directly to the Campus Safety Program Manager.A key focus of the Security Representative is to deliver customer focused services, act as a first responder to accidents on campus, act as Security Dispatch, assist with emergency evacuations as well as maintain a safe environment using electronic monitoring equipment and physical patrols of the University campus. Other major responsibilities include conducting investigations, interviewing, report writing, taking statements, and handling evidence. This position involves a considerable amount of standing and walking.This is a Limited-Term position, ending August 01, 2027, with 35 hours per week, working Monday to Friday, from 12:00pm to 7:30pm.Responsibilities
  • Primarily, patrol the RLLC on foot or vehicle in order to monitor the security and safety of University property as well as the staff, students and public who access the campus.
  • Provide customer service to all persons using University facilities which includes providing information, directions and responding to complaints
  • Liaise with individuals, organizations, groups on campus to promote safety and security awareness
  • Recognize and investigate all incidents, unusual occurrences, suspicious persons and safety concerns
  • Conduct basic investigations including interviews, statements, surveillance, and recovery of property
  • Write reports and maintain timely and accurate notes on incidents
  • Provide first line response to security emergencies and act as key link to the dispatch centre
  • Assess incident scene and recommend assistance from external agencies such as EMS, Calgary Police, and Fire department
  • Provide first aid as necessary including the use of AED and Naloxone
  • Monitor, assess, record, and respond appropriately to all alarms including fire systems, alarm systems, and CCTV systems
  • Control access to buildings and properties on the Mount Royal University campus
Qualifications
  • Minimum one year post-secondary certificate/program completion
  • An understanding of the Canadian legal system is required
  • Security License through the Government of Alberta is required
  • CPR and First Aid certificate is required
  • Class 5 Alberta Driver's License and clean drivers abstract is required
  • Minimum 6 – 12 months of related security or law enforcement experience, and customer service experience
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, and written skills
  • Proficient computer skills

  • Independent judgment and problem solving abilities
