- Direct and control traffic using standardized signals and approved traffic control devices.
- Maintain awareness of vehicle flow, worker locations, and potential hazards in the work zone.
- Set up, maintain, and monitor temporary traffic control layouts according to site traffic control plans.
- Follow proper placement of signs, cones, and other devices as required.
- Coordinate with the site foreman for traffic management.
- Help ensure the safety of workers, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians around the work area.
- Respond quickly to unsafe conditions or any changes in traffic or site activity.
- Communicate clearly with drivers, workers, and other TCPs using verbal instructions, hand signals, or radios.
- Wear required high‑visibility clothing and ensure all equipment is in good working condition.
- Inspect and properly use traffic control tools such as paddles, cones, radios, and signs.
- Identify and report hazards such as poor visibility, weather issues, aggressive drivers, or unexpected site changes.
- Participate in site‑specific hazard assessments as needed.
- Stay alert and attentive throughout the shift.
- Valid Traffic Control Person (TCP) certification.
- Training that follows the latest edition of the Traffic Management Manual (TMM), including traffic control responsibilities, device standards, layout requirements, and safe work practices.
- Knowledge of the 2020 TMM fundamentals.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) and Traffic Management Plans (TMPs).
- Strong situational awareness and judgment.
- Effective communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Physically capable of standing for long periods, working in varying conditions, and handling equipment.
- Travel as required
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment is required
- Willing to work in field and in all weather conditions
- Willing to work overtime (may include weekends) during the busy season (April to October) and on call as necessary.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
