The English Language Program at The University of Winnipeg is seeking an English as an Additional Language (EAL/ESL) instructor for Canadian Culture and History Workshop as part of the Short Term Program.The purpose of this course is to help students improve their English speaking and listening skills while gaining understanding of Canadian culture and key parts of its history. Students will practice and apply a variety of English speaking skills, such as asking questions to a presenter, participating in group discussions, using presentation skills, and leading a seminar discussion through an exploration of topics related to Canadian culture and history. Skill focus: speaking and listeningRole and Responsibilities:
  • Course preparation and outline in accordance with Program requirements
  • Lesson / lecture preparation
  • Attendance management
  • Teaching
  • Student contact including providing assessment and constructive feedback to students
  • Participation in placement testing, staff meetings, orientations and graduation ceremonies
  • Preparation and creation of assessments
  • Marking and grading
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • TESL Certificate or CELTA required
  • Undergraduate degree required
  • Minimum 1 year experience designing and implementing activities and exercises addressing different themes and topics related to Canadian culture and history
  • Knowledge of Canadian culture, daily life, things that are unique to Canada
  • Knowledge of creating and implementing needs assessments
  • Experience providing informal student assessments and formal student evaluation
  • Knowledge and experience implementing various classroom management techniques
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience instructing resume writing and interview skills considered an asset
  • Experience instructing oral and written communication specific to the workplace considered an asset
  • Experience instructing common business and workplace vocabulary, idiomatic language and grammar considered an asset
  • Experience using online teaching platforms considered an asset
  • Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
