Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations, the Pit Labourer Summer Student positions support day-to-day pit operations and provide hands-on experience working in an open-pit mining environment with exposure to mobile equipment and safe work practices.This is a temporary, safety sensitive position based at our Highvale Mine (SunHills) located just south of Wabamun Lake, approximately 65 kilometers west of Edmonton, Alberta.This is a USW position covered by the terms of the collective agreement.A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Perform general labour duties in the open pit, including housekeeping and work-area clean-up
- Operate rock truck, and potentially other mobile equipment, as trained and qualified
- Conduct pre-use inspections of mobile equipment and tools
- Assist operations personnel with routine pit activities
- Work safely around heavy mobile equipment and active mining areas
- Install, maintain, and remove safety signage, barricades, and work controls
- Assist with upkeep of pit infrastructure, haul roads, and walkways
- Load, unload, and transport tools, equipment, and materials
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and hazard identification activities
- Follow all TransAlta safety, environmental, and operational procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned to support pit operations
- Currently enrolled in, or returning to, a post-secondary program following the summer term
- Ability to perform physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Comfortable working in an industrial environment around heavy equipment
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work effectively as part of a team
- Valid Class 5 driver's license required
- Ability to be trained and qualified to operate mobile equipment, including rock truck
