CNC (brake press) set up experienceRole Overview
Client is seeking a highly skilled Lead Precision Metal Fabricator to serve as the technical backbone of our production department. This person will be the bridge between engineering concepts and finished products. You will lead the production team by example, troubleshoot complex fabrication challenges, and act as the primary advisor on Design for Manufacturing (DfM) during the prototyping phase. 8000 sq foot facility with approximately 40 employees oh the shop floor.Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Production Oversight
  • Act as the "subject matter expert" for the production floor, providing guidance on complex setups and advanced fabrication techniques.
  • Mentor junior fabricators and welders to elevate the shop's overall skill level and maintain quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and optimize production workflows to reduce lead times.
  • Reviewing orders with engineering team
Prototyping & R&D Support
  • Collaborate directly with engineers to build first-article prototypes from preliminary sketches or CAD models.
  • Iterate on designs in real-time, identifying physical constraints that software might overlook.
  • Select appropriate tooling, materials, and sequences for unique, one-off builds.
Manufacturability (DfM) Consulting
  • Review technical drawings before they hit the floor to identify potential production bottlenecks or "un-buildable" features.
  • Advise the design team on cost-saving measures, such as material yield optimization or simplifying bend sequences.
  • Explain the "why" behind technical limitations to non-technical stakeholders clearly and concisely.
Technical Requirements & Skills
  • Mastery of Fabrication: Expert-level proficiency in TIG/MIG welding (stainless, aluminum, and carbon steel), precision braking, and shearing.
  • Blueprint Literacy: Ability to interpret complex GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols and 3D CAD exports.
  • Mathematical Precision: Strong grasp of trigonometry and geometry for calculating bend deductions and flat patterns.
  • Tooling Expertise: Deep knowledge of CNC press brake programming (e.g., Accurpress) and laser/waterjet nesting software.
  • Working with Fiber Optic Lazer
  • Quality Control: Proficiency with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges) to ensure tolerances of $\pm 0.005$ or tighter.
  • Problem Solver: You don't just find holes; you find the plug. You enjoy the "puzzle" of a difficult build.
  • Communicator: Ability to explain technical welding or forming constraints to an engineer without being dismissive.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable shifting from a high-volume production mindset to a slow, methodical prototyping mindset.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 8+ years in precision sheet metal or custom fabrication, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Education: High school diploma required; AWS Certifications or an Associate Degree in Welding Technology/Manufacturing is a plus.
