
Underwriting Counsel

- Reviewing and handling policies for both residential and commercial real estate transactions.
- Analyzing risk associated with insuring real estate transactions based on parameters defined by the Company.
- Responding to customer and internal inquiries and questions related to underwriting issues arising on residential and commercial transactions and advising as to the real estate process and title insurance coverage in Ontario in a timely manner.
- Reviewing and investigating complex underwriting issues (including title and off-title matters such as complex Planning Act and estate issues) and real estate fraud mitigation issues, conduct risk assessments, and make insurability decisions.
- Drafting title insurance underwriting clauses and endorsements
- Reviewing and interpreting reports generated from identity verification tests.
- Managing a high volume of files under tight timelines in accordance with established parameters.
- Communicating and explaining complex insurability decisions to clients both verbally and in writing.
- Recognizing and re-directing enquiries that should be addressed by other teams in the Company.
- Answering and handling customer service calls through our general underwriting phone queue.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
- Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Minimum 3 years real estate law firm/transaction experience or equivalent.
- Knowledge of residential and commercial real estate transactions.
- Understanding of the real estate process and title and off-title issues, and their resolutions.
- Understanding of real estate fraud trends, fraud red flags, and fraud mitigation tools.
- Ability to work independently and make independent decisions in accordance with established parameters.
- Ability to multi-task and adhere to numerous concurrent deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication, customer service, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Good computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Word Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
