This is the role for you!As a Land Use Planner, you will research and present solutions to ensure public land assets are used economically, productively, efficiently, and in an environmentally responsible manner. You will be responsible for supporting land planning activities for both the Edmonton Transportation/Utility Corridor (TUC), and program lands within the north region. You will co-ordinate and consult with government departments, municipal authorities, utility companies and land developers and will advise on land issues for capital projects, including subdivision, utilities, access and required agreements.The ideal candidate will also have the ability to read and interpret legislation, understand and work with land titles, including encumbrances, registered plans, and engineering documents. Candidates should have the ability to produce basic maps to communicate with colleagues and clients. You will be required to collaborate with others, creatively problem solve, and be agile while always driving for results.Some of the primary responsibilities for the Land Use Planner include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and draft project request forms and memorandums to instruct needed property acquisitions
  • Consult with staff from Infrastructure to clarify and confirm land needs, identify property encumbrances and other details
  • Assist senior staff with the review of surplus land disposition projects and acquisitions for Infrastructure's capital projects
  • Review Secondary Land Use applications, municipal zoning, and practices related
  • Receive and distribute federal government, other provincial department or municipal notices or referrals related to proposed acquisitions, disposals, municipal tax notices or maintenance issues near or on Infrastructure's properties
  • Support and respond to inquiries from management in the form of Action Requests, briefing notes, proposed policy directions, or requests for background information on emails, meetings, etc.
QualificationsRequirements:
  • University graduation in Land Use Planning or a closely related area
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta License
  • Current designation or eligibility for professional membership with Alberta Professional Planners Institute - Canadian Institute of Planners
Equivalency: Related experience or education considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.Assets:
  • A minimum of (1) year of related experience in land use planning, including familiarity with the land ownership process, legal land descriptions, applicable provincial statutes, regulations, municipal planning legislation, as well as knowledge of land related fields such as surveying and land development industry is preferred.
  • Familiar with the Government Organization Act and Municipal Government Act
  • Proficient in the use of computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite, graphics and computer aided design, database programs, Alberta Land Titles SPIN system, geographical information systems, and the internet
  • Proficient in the use of municipal planning studies, topographic maps and aerial photographs
  • Proficient in interpreting engineering and construction drawings, Alberta Township Survey system, legal survey plans, real property encumbrances
  • Ability to prepare maps and drawings suitable for work unit's business needs
  • Excellence in business writing, organization, and prioritization
NotesLocation: Edmonton, ABHours of Work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week

  • This position may involve limited occasional travel; candidates are required to have a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
