Veterinary AssistantDepartment: EmergencyLocation: Newmarket, OntarioCasual shifts available404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital welcomes Veterinary Assistants to join our busy Emergency department team on a Casual basis.This department is open 24/7, and handles cases that are urgent and emergent, as well as seeing all kinds of pets, including cats, dogs, birds, snakes, rabbits, ferrets, and many more!This position involves patient care, client communication, some animal husbandry duties, and assisting the DVMs and RVTs in their daily roles. Some experience in a veterinary setting and/or a certificate from a Veterinary Assistant program would be an asset.Duties include (but are not limited to):Provides compassionate care to all clients and patientsAdministers treatments as directed under the supervision of an RVT and/or DVMCares for patients which includes feeding, cleaning kennels and/or patients, cleaning food dishes, and any other species-specific tasksPromptly informs the attending RVT or DVM of any change in status of the patientDemonstrates proper patient handling techniques when assisting RVTs and DVMs and is able to restrain fractious or potentially fractious patientsHandles patients that are ill, stressed or in pain that may require critical care and sensitive handlingMaintains the hospital work areas by keeping them organized, having floors swept and mopped routinely, and kennels cleaned daily or when soiled (even if occupied)Monitors and records patient urination, bowel movements and food intake throughout the dayAssists in preparation for emergency procedures/surgery, assists in monitoring patients during procedures and on recovery, and moving patientsAssists DVMs and RVTs in collection of blood/urine samples, radiographs and FAST scan ultrasoundsAssists RVTs with daily tasks and patient care as directed (e.g. wound/incision care, running in-house bloodwork, changing IV bandages, obtaining vitals on patients as directed by RVT)Provides emotional and physical support for patients recovering from anesthesiaPrepares appointment rooms for examinations (e.g. ensuring rooms are stocked and clean) as requiredPerforms general hospital maintenance, laundry, and ordering/stocking inventory, as requiredMaintains cleanliness of hospital facility, inside and outsideFacilitates visits between patients and clients and answers basic questionsEnsures requests of families of deceased patients are followed for cremation and memorial keepsakesAny additional tasks or duties as directed by a department Supervisor or Leadership teamWhat VCA Canada OffersJoin our team and you will make a huge difference in the lives of pets and their families!
