The position will help oversee the day-to-day operations of Billing, ensuring financial controls are operating effectively. This individual will assist in continuous improvement efforts to core processes to increase the quality of output as well as improve the productivity of the team. The position will build and maintain relationships with the business and ensure the team delivers high quality and timely service to the Firm. This position represents the leadership of the Billing and whole Finance teams, so will work closely with the other Billing Leaders and Director to ensure alignment of priorities and culture.This role can be based out of our Montreal or Ottawa office.RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Guide, train and develop Billing team members
  • Assist with various process improvement initiatives relating to Billing
  • Assist in resolving or redirecting escalations related to all finance operations
  • Coordinate and participate in testing for system upgrades and other enhancements
  • Assist in completion of annual performance reviews
  • Liaise with the legal professionals, management and members of the finance team to ensure needs are addressed in a timely manner
  • Work directly with specified portfolio of Billing Professionals (MBP) to manage the billing related process from beginning to end including compliance with clients’ guidelines and engagement terms relating to rates, content and relevant changes based on MBPs instructions
  • Address queries received on billing related issues and process
  • Review and ensure completeness of NBI forms to ensure tax is appropriately applied
  • Set up bill formats based on special rates and in compliance with client requirements
  • Following up with Billing Professionals to ensure WIP is being billed on a timely basis as well as other finance related practice management issues as required
  • Review draft bill for errors and obtain approval from lawyer to finalize bill
  • Other duties as assigned and in alignment with the Firm’s Strategic Plan
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual is a must (French/English)
  • 5+ years of experience in billing in a law firm or professional services firm.
  • Must be a team player and builder (when necessary), with exceptional interpersonal skills. Possess a high degree of confidence, professional maturity and demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assess situations objectively and professionally and execute solutions in the same manner
  • Proficient with accounting and billing software programs. Excellent computer skills, with proficiency with the entire Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Advanced knowledge of Aderant or similar accounting software systems considered an asset.

The starting range for this role is $60,000 to $85,000. Starting salary will be determined based on an applicant’s individual skills, competencies and unique qualifications. Gowling WLG employees have the potential to exceed this range based on tenure and performance.This position is currently vacant and is open to both internal and external candidates.
