This full-time position will be based in Nisku, Alberta.Reporting to directly to the CEO and collaborating with the senior management team, the Safety Specialist will support and maintain a strong safety culture across 3 manufacturing operations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. The Safety Specialist will be responsible for implementing and monitoring health and safety systems, conducting training, ensuring compliance with provincial legislation and national codes, and continuously improving organizational safety practices.Key Responsibilities
- Review, Implement, monitor, and improve the company's Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) across multiple provincial jurisdictions.
- Conduct regular site safety inspections, hazard assessments, and risk evaluations at facilities and job sites.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety legislation, including:
- OHS Legislation in Alberta (OHS Code), British Columbia (WorkSafeBC OHSR), and Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Employment Act & OHS Regulations 2020).
- WHMIS 2015, TDG, and other applicable federal standards.
- Promote awareness and ensure adherence to applicable CSA, ANSI, and other safety codes (e.g., CSA Z462, CSA Z1000, NFCC, NBCC, CEC).
- Lead the development, implementation, and review of safety strategies, policies, and programs, aligning them with legislative updates and industry best practices.
- Deliver and coordinate safety orientation and ongoing training programs for all staff, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Investigate incidents and near-misses, prepare reports, and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Coordinate internal and external audits, and assist in maintaining COR/SECOR certification in applicable provinces.
- Maintain records of training, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
- Act as the primary contact for safety-related concerns, regulatory inspections, and reporting.
- Support management in developing a culture of continuous improvement and proactive safety engagement across all departments.
- Travel as needed to support projects and operations in BC, SK, and AB (25 % )
- Excellent communication, leadership, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated success in reviewing and implementing safety policies, programs and procedures
- Post-secondary education or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- Certification or working toward:
- NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) or equivalent
- CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) is an asset
- WHMIS 2015, TDG, First Aid/CPR, Fall Protection, and other relevant safety training
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an HSE role in manufacturing, construction, or industrial settings
- Strong working knowledge of OHS legislation in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and BC.
- Experience, understanding & knowledge of ISO standards and the incorporation & collaborationof the safety program with ISO standards
- Familiarity with COR/SECOR, safety audits, and safety program development.
- Experience with CSA, ANSI, ASME, and other applicable safety codes.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety documentation systems.
- Ability to travel to regional sites within AB, SK, and BC as required (25 %)
- Experience in manufacturing
- Training in incident investigation techniques (e.g., Root Cause Analysis).
- Experience coordinating with regulatory bodies such as WorkSafeBC, Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour, and Alberta OHS.
