Reporting to the Commissioning Coordinator, the ASU Commissioning Operator is responsible for supporting the initial startup, testing, and stabilization of the Air Separation Unit (ASU). This role ensures all equipment is safely energized, tested, and brought to full production capacity in compliance with site safety and operational standards.This is a hands-on field position requiring close collaboration with vendors, subcontractors, and operations personnel. The successful candidate will troubleshoot equipment, verify system performance against design specifications, execute commissioning procedures, and support operator training.Key Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to all site-specific safety directives, including the Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) plan, also known as the Safety In Transition (SIT) plan.
- Understand and comply with all EH&S standards, including permitting requirements, energy isolation (LOTO), and Basic Safety Process (BSP) protocols.
- Act as a Safety Ambassador by participating in safety drills, inspections, toolbox talks, and site safety meetings.
- Ensure all incidents and near-misses are promptly reported.
- Quickly develop a thorough understanding of the ASU commissioning and startup plans in collaboration with the Commissioning Coordinator.
- Review system commissioning packages and associated procedures.
- Complete Safety Work Permit (SWP) training.
- Support Construction Complete (CC) walkdowns.
- Support Mechanical Complete (MC) walkdowns.
- Install energy isolations and issue Safety Work Permits as required.
- Execute commissioning and startup procedures in accordance with approved documentation.
- Provide daily progress updates to the ASU CSU Coordinator.
- Redline and update Site Work Instruction Manuals (SWIMs), also known as operating procedures.
- Commission and support startup of critical cryogenic equipment including:
- Main and booster air compressors
- Compander
- Cryogenic pumps
- Cold box cooldown systems
- Support and oversee vendors and contractors on site, monitoring safety and progress.
- Share commissioning and startup (CSU) expertise, mentor junior team members, and support operations training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Certification
- Power Engineer certification (minimum 4th Class).
- 3-5 years of hands-on operating experience with cryogenic Air Separation Units (ASUs).
- Prior experience in a commissioning or startup role is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of:
- Cryogenic air separation processes
- Distillation systems
- Molecular sieve technology (Temperature Swing Adsorption - TSA)
- Oxygen awareness, including strict cleanliness protocols when working with high-pressure pure oxygen systems.
- Construction Safety Training System (CSTS-20)
- Basic Scaffold Safety (CSTS-20)
