- Establish short-term operational plans with measurable contribution to function or business area results.
- Provide technical leadership and support to the extended L3 Harris Wescam Mechanical Engineering team
- Hold technical responsibility for the overall mechanical design integrity of all products designed at L3 Harris Wescam
- Participate in all technical design reviews to ensure mechanical design integrity is achieved
- Contribute to the conceptual design, detailed design and engineering validation of mechanical sub-systems and components as a team leader in reference to product design activities
- Foster career development of professional staff, and provide performance feedback through bi-yearly performance reviews.
- Develop and maintain the Mechanical Engineering design processes and standards
- Manage the selection of Mechanical Engineering tools to foster innovation and maximize efficiency of the product development process
- Estimate the cost and schedule of assigned mechanical work packages and validate work packages estimated by other mechanical leads/designers. Monitor actuals against estimate, and develop strategies to continually improve on estimate accuracy.
- Monitor mechanical design engineering demand via the engineering manpower database and provide recommendations for new hires to meet expanding demand
- Source and develop external mechanical design resources that can be utilized on demand to meet fluctuating resource requirements
- Provide mechanical technical support to other areas of the organization including Operations, Operations Engineering, Bids and Proposals, Sales and Marketing, and Export Compliance
- Keep in synchronization with Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical industry trends and new technologies that may be relevant to L3 Harris Wescam's present and future product development
- As required, provide management and technical leadership for NPI projects, including meeting cost and schedule objectives
- Participate in department continuous improvement processes
- Management and leadership knowledge in job area and comprehensive knowledge within professional discipline.
- Combined technical and interpersonal communication skills, project management skills and a proven ability to meet conflicting deadlines driven by varying stakeholders.
- Proficient at problem solving using critical thinking and decisive reasoning
- Knowledge of opto-mechanical design principles & optical principles
- Knowledge of machining and optical manufacturing techniques and processes
- Knowledge of machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites manufacturing techniques and processes
- Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques and methods
- Knowledge of Materials Science: Corrosion, composites, surface coating and conversion, reference mil spec
- Experience with CAD Design using SolidWorks
- Requires management and leadership knowledge in job area.
- Typically has comprehensive knowledge and skills within a specific technical or professional discipline and may have broad understanding of other areas within the job function.
- Technical Proficiency in:
- Structural analysis - FEA, Thermal analysis - FEA & CFD, Vibration isolation and troubleshooting
- Testing methods - Vibration and thermal
- Motion systems - analysis, selection and design
- Bachelor's Degree and minimum 9 years prior related experience, or Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience, or In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
