Powertech’s Substations Asset Management & Research department offers innovative solutions to the electric utility industry’s most difficult problems. With advanced laboratories and expertise, we conduct investigations and test programs to optimize lifecycle of electrical industry components. Whether for pre-deployment technology evaluation, operation and maintenance support, condition assessment and repair, or end of life investigation, we work with our customers on maximizing the value from their re-investment dollars through data-driven decision-making.Our team is considered world-class in the areas of power transformers and oil & gas insulation. The team continues to initiate and lead global research related to lifecycle management of dielectric insulations and transformers. In addition, the team is continually advancing a number of innovative technologies in various stages of incubation and development, from concept through to commercialization.This is a hands-on role that will appeal to a Senior Engineer who enjoys being in a commercial lab setting, working in a multi-disciplinary environment with a focus on operational improvements within electrical utilities. Core responsibilities will include the following:
  • Evaluate existing test and analysis techniques; develop and recommend new methods to improve operation;
  • Design experiments for new areas of research; recommend suitability of new testing equipment/technologies
  • Participate in the planning, preparation and execution of tests and strategies for condition assessment
  • Design, build and test electronic control, measurement instrumentation, and data acquisition systems for proof-of-concept devices and custom test equipment
  • Prepare engineering documentation and drawings, support the authentication process
  • Provide the troubleshoot on the devices both within the lab and in the field, support the test and commissioning
  • Carry out root cause and failure analysis investigations
  • Manage projects of varying complexity from start to finish, plan and manage resources, prepare a variety of budget information and cost benefit analysis
  • Provide leadership within and across teams, including constructive feedback, inputs for lessons learned, leading improvement initiatives, etc.
  • Undertake business development activities and solicit new clients by promoting products, services and exploring new products and services; represent Powertech around the globe; this position requires both local and international travel.
In addition, these are desired skillsets:
  • Direct experience associated with design and building of control systems and measurement instrumentation
  • Advance capability in PLC programming
  • Relevant experience with or understanding of electric utility segments and equipment, especially oil-filled transformers
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of experimental test setups from conception to completion
  • Experience with power tools and shop equipment
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communications skills including the ability to build successful relationships, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences and liaise with peers in industry
  • Excellent decision making and problem solving skills; the position requires prudent technical and business risk-taking.
  • Assess future market needs and develop strategies and plans for continued growth; this includes client engagement, development and marketing of new and existing services, capital investments, and development of new laboratories.
Qualifications
  • Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering Degree from a recognized university. Candidates with Post Graduate Degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of industrial experience in a laboratory or research environment and electric utility or electrical equipment supplier (OEM) or diagnostics testing agency in the areas of substations or generation maintenance or asset management.
  • Registration or ability to immediately register as a professional engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (i.e., non-British Columbia registrations are acceptable as long as there is an ability to immediately transfer the accreditation).
