Edmonton, AlbertaOn behalf of our client, Russel Metals, we are currently searching for an Assistant Controller. The ideal candidate must be self-driven, detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.Reporting to the Regional Controller, as the Assistant Controller, you will complete the full accounting cycle, accounting duties, as well as provide financial coaching to Regional & Branch Management.As the Assistant Controller, you will:
- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial information through the preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and detailed account analysis in support of the monthly financial close.
- Prepare and analyze monthly management and operational reports, providing insights on financial performance, trends, and variances to support management decision-making.
- Support the month-end and year-end close process, including reconciliations, analysis, and issue resolution, in compliance with internal accounting policies and applicable accounting standards.
- Review accounts payable transactions across multiple divisions to ensure appropriate approvals, accurate coding, and adherence to internal control policies.
- Review and validate payroll calculations, including salaried compensation, commissions, and overtime, ensuring accuracy, authorization, and compliance prior to submission for processing by head office.
- Prepare recurring and ad-hoc financial and analytical reports for regional and senior management.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation to support reporting, audit, and internal control requirements.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and head office to resolve accounting issues and support consistent financial reporting.
- Post-secondary education in the field of Accounting or Finance
- Proficient in all MS Office applications, with advanced Excel skills and ability to work with large amounts of data and existing spreadsheets and tracking documents.
- Prior experience with Oracle financials and/or Experience with AS400-based inventory management systems is an asset.
- Able to identify accounting issues, troubleshoot solutions, and make corrections.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy required.
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple demands.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving solving and communication skills.
- Time management and attention to detail skills are essential.
- Ability to work in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment.
