Job Category: EngineeringDegree Level: Bachelor's DegreeJob Description:The Liaison Engineer III, Structural, is responsible to evaluate and resolve engineering-related production problems encountered in assigned construction areas at Seaspan, particularly related, but not limited, to Primary and Secondary Structure, Weld Details, steel outfitting, class and customer inspections and consolidation issues. Under the direction of the Liaison Engineering Lead, the Liaison Engineer III supports operations in assigned areas including: reviews production schedules, engineering specifications, orders, and related information to maintain current knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities in assigned areas. This role will liaise with distributed design teams in order to successfully complete tasks as assigned by the Liaison Engineering Lead. This role interfaces with Operation personnel to resolve production and testing issues and maintain schedule. This role will support one or more junior engineers or specialist in helping develop solutions, teaching the proper application of standards and specifications, and reviewing the work before submittal.Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
  • Provide engineering support as assigned in areas of construction to provide feasible resolutions within areas of expertise depending on the current ship construction stage factoring in strict schedule and cost constraints.
  • Understand the limits of knowledge and, where a higher technical authority approval is required, seek the approval prior to implementing a solution.
  • Understand the limits of the more junior engineers to support their development and ensure assigned tasks are within their technical ability.
  • A working understanding of the use of and application of material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.
  • Serve on special project or focus groups as the representative for Liaison/Detail Design to help resolve large scale, multidisciplinary issues.
  • Lead Special Projects within the Liaison Team, including but not limited to: CPI Projects, Major issue resolution group, Design Loop Feedback, Quality initiatives or Special Production support activities.
  • Develop and improve processes that are utilized by the team while considering the impact of these processes on upstream and downstream stakeholders.
  • Liaise with Operations, Planning and Production Control to solve production issues in a technically acceptable manner and maintain cost and schedule objectives.
  • Assist with design documents for new builds or repairs in order to achieve customer, Classification Society and regulatory approval.
  • Provide support to suppliers and subcontractors related to the activities in areas of construction to achieve cost and schedule performance.
  • Engineering degree in Structural/Civil or Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 4+ years of post-secondary experience in Structural/Civil Engineering or large scale engineering projects.
  • Professional Engineer, Incorporated Engineer or Engineer in Training designation with a recognized, accredited institution.
  • Previous maritime, shipyard or shipboard knowledge or experience is desired.
  • Experience working with a diverse integrated project team is considered an asset. Technical knowledge and engineering skills, including use of analysis tools and knowledge of analytical methods.
