
Chief of Emergency Communications (Limited to EFFU Members Only)

- Supervise, guide, and manage the Emergency Response Communication Centre (ERCC) and its staff
- Lead the development and implementation of new initiatives to enhance ERCC services
- Manage human resources functions in a unionized setting, including hiring, training, performance management, and discipline
- Collaborate and act as a primary liaison with other City branches and external agencies like Alberta Health Services and Edmonton Police Services
- Maintain and update ERCC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Guidelines
- Provide subject matter expertise to support technology projects, upgrades, and migrations
- Manage and lead relationships with external agencies, ensuring seamless call and information transfer
- Ensure the facility safety and operational requirements of two active communications centers are maintained
- Represent the needs of the ERCC work area and its staff in interactions with all of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and the City of Edmonton
- Completion of grade 12 or equivalent
- Firefighter Qualified and Captain Qualified certification from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services
- Minimum 7 years in the position of Firefighter Qualified or higher, including a minimum of three years of supervisory experience
- Minimum of 15 years of work experience in the Emergency Communications Centre for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services
- An Emergency Communications & Response Certificate or relevant education from a recognized post-secondary institution
- Incident Command System (ICS) 200 from the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)
- Strong demonstrated leadership, supervision, organization, and team-building skills
- Ability to make sound decisions with an understanding of budgetary and political implications
- Strong conflict management, problem-solving, and consensus-building skills
- Ability to coach, mentor, and guide other leaders to improve their leadership skills
- Effective interpersonal and oral communication skills
- Ability to balance and manage competing interests and multiple responsibilities at the same time
- Ability to work with minimal direction and achieve strict deadlines
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of Fire/Rescue and EMS operations and public safety dispatching functions
- A profound understanding of the relationship between dispatch/communications and the effective mitigation of emergency response incidents

- Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Possession of current Rescuer CPR certification
- Current EFD-Emergency Fire certification and EFD-Q certification from the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch
- This position is required to be on call and work various shifts to ensure effective 24/7, 365 operations
- Exposure to psychologically sensitive and traumatic situations, as well as confrontational situations will the public
