Situated in the heart of downtown, our department is affiliated with various departments, institutes, and research organizations, providing a broad network for our staff and students.Reporting to the Director, Physics Learning and Research Services, the Cryogenics Facility Technologist plays a key role in operating and maintaining a state of the art cryogenics facility that includes a bulk nitrogen tank facility as well as a helium liquification system. Cryogenics Facility Technologist ensures the reliable purchase, storage, and distribution of bulk liquid nitrogen and liquid helium while maintaining the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.The Cryogenics Facility Technologist is also responsible for overseeing the work of casual staff, including assigning tasks, providing training on hand tools, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.Your responsibilities will include:
- Daily check and record bulk tank liquid nitrogen level to ensure sufficient stock
- Daily check and record liquid helium machine indicators and liquid level
- Filling liquid nitrogen cylinders in a timely manner, including checking the condition of cylinder prior and after filling, recording Customer and volume supplied, filling delivery forms, and filling Transportation of Dangerous Goods forms.
- Filling liquid helium cylinders as required; Maintain liquid nitrogen cylinder stock
- Operating and maintaining the Helium Liquefaction System, including ATL Liquefiers, Sumitomo compressors, Quantum Design Helium Liquefier
- Operating and maintaining Helium Recovery System, including Bauer high-pressure compressor, gas holder, recovery piping, gas meters, gas cylinders, monitor lab recovery rates
- Updating and maintaining monthly charges to customers via billing program
- Issuing Requests for Proposals (RDP) and other tendering documents for parts and equipment.
- Updating and maintaining monthly charges to customers via billing program
- Preparing monthly spreadsheets of external customers for invoice preparation and issuing invoices to customers
- Liaising with stakeholders in determining customer requirements and preparing quotes, intake customers into the billing system and Campus Movers customer list
- Processing supplier invoices for payment
- Maintaining spreadsheets of cryogenic expenses and income for budgeting; Informing customers of cryogenic procedures and safe practices
- Ensuring the facility and activities are in compliance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations
- Maintaining a safe operating environment and practicing safe procedures
- Overseeing the work of casual staff, including assigning tasks, providing training on hand tools, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.
- A bachelor's degree in relevant fields such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, industrial technology, or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on technical experience
- A minimum of five (5) years recent and relevant experience in working with cryogenic systems, including the safe handling of liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, and high-pressure gas cylinders
- Strong Knowledge of cryogenic equipment operation and maintenance, such as liquefiers, compressors (e.g., Quantum Design, Bauer, Cryo Mech, Bluefors, Sumitomo), purifiers, gas recovery systems, and associated instrumentation
- Strong understanding and knowledge of safety standards and regulatory requirements, including Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and oxygen-deficiency hazard mitigation
- High proficiency in data recording, inventory management, and basic administrative tasks, including spreadsheet work, customer billing, and documentation required for cryogenic distribution
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues with pumps, compressors, valves, gas handling infrastructure, and facility monitoring systems
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty members, students, researchers, and external stakeholders.
- Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail
- Excellent technical communication skills and documentation skills
- Must complete an online training of Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certificate upon employment to ensure compliance with the TDG regulations

USW Pay Band 13 -- $86,340. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $110,415. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
