About the opportunityThe Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies, transitioning to the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (DLLC) welcomes applications for a 10-month Limited Term Appointment (LTA) at the rank of Instructor, effective July 1, 2026 for the 2026/27 academic year. We seek a candidate with demonstrated expertise in undergraduate language teaching in two of the languages taught in DLLC (Spanish, Italian, Chinese, German, or Arabic). Priority will be given to candidates able to teach Spanish language courses, as Spanish represents the largest proportion of beginner-level language instruction in the department, and to teach in an additional language program.At the same time, the department welcomes applications from candidates whose expertise spans language pedagogy, applied linguistics, intercultural communication, or related interdisciplinary fields, and who can contribute to cross-program teaching initiatives.This appointment supports DLLC's move toward a more integrated model of language teaching and learning and offers an opportunity to contribute to shared curriculum practices and student-centered initiatives during a period of program renewal and growth.Teaching ProfileThe standard teaching load is six 3-credit undergraduate courses over the appointment period.Teaching will primarily involve undergraduate language instruction, especially at the introductory and intermediate levels. Depending on departmental needs and candidate expertise, responsibilities may also include:
  • Teaching in an additional language offered by the department;
  • Contributing to a cross-program undergraduate course (e.g., Intercultural Communication, Introduction to Applied Linguistics for Language Learners, Language and Society, or related areas);
  • Participating in multi-section coordination, shared assessment practices, or curriculum development initiatives.
As this is a limited-term appointment, the position is primarily teaching-focused, with service contributions appropriate to the role.The successful candidate will have access to professional development opportunities, including eligibility for a Professional Development Allowance in accordance with university policies.Qualifications Required:
  • A PhD in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Comparative Literature, Translation Studies, Cultural Studies, or a closely related field. Candidates with an MA and substantial university-level teaching experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate language teaching.
  • Native or near-native proficiency (CEFR C2 or equivalent) in Spanish and advanced proficiency in a second language offered in DLLC (Italian, Chinese, German, or Arabic), with the ability to teach undergraduate language courses in both.
  • Full proficiency in English.
  • Familiarity with communicative and task-based language teaching approaches.
  • Evidence of inclusive, student-centered pedagogy.
Additional Assets
  • Familiarity with innovative and current language pedagogies approaches and proficiency-aligned curriculum design and assessment.
  • Experience with Languages for Specific Purposes.
  • Experience in the pedagogically grounded use of digital tools, learning management systems, and technology-mediated language instruction.
  • Experience with implementing forward-thinking, innovative curricula, multi-section coordination, and assessment design.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a multi-language academic unit.
