Aplin Martin has been recognized numerous times and has received the Project of the Year award from the Public Works Association of BC.Position Overview:The position of Planning Analyst is the mid-level position within the professional planning industry, involving professional-level duties and judgment. This position level receives immediate direction and supervision from project planners, planners and the planning manager as well as works in tandem with the urban designers.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Interact and coordinate with outside agencies, select industry partners and subconsultants.
  • Coordinate and attend site visits, when required.
  • Review Bylaw and Policies documents and research project background information.
  • Develop planning studies and reports in support of new and updated plans, programs, and regulations.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and attend open houses.
  • Answer Clients on day-to-day technical enquiries and assist in resolving citizen and customer issues.
  • Provides information to the public regarding development regulations.
  • Follow established project schedule.
  • Undertake technical, proposal, and memorandum writing.
  • Assist in the review of moderately difficult site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
  • Collect a variety of statistical data and prepare reports and maps.
  • May perform basic subdivision and conceptual layout design as well as graphic illustration.
  • Prepare and coordinate development application packages.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, research and data collection.
  • Knowledge of a relevant specialization such as transportation, land use, or affordable housing is desired.
  • Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
  • Statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations.
  • General knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Internet applications, and GIS.
  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems.
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions.
  • Ability to create graphic designs, development strategies, and render site plans via sketches and/or computer graphics highly desirable.
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning, architecture, public policy, or related area of study in addition to 0-5 years of planning experience. Other positions at this level require a master's degree but, in these cases, no formal experience is usually required.
