We acknowledge all Nations who live, work, and play here, help us steward this land, and honour and celebrate this place.The OpportunityThe Stage Carpenter/Omni Tech position will have a background in stage carpentry, along with basic competencies in the remaining departments. The job task may include assisting across other technical areas, depending on the nature of the production, including lighting, staging, sound, and video departments. We're looking for support for the delivery of Performing Arts Programs and on campus.Role and ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Production Manager, Performing Arts, the stage carpenter/omni tech will help support this year's artistic across campus, including live music, dance, opera, literary readings, and more. Below are some key accountabilities:
  • Administration of the stage carpentry department, including direction of assigned crews, with attention to safety procedures and within the supplied frameworks of staffing, equipment, space and time.
  • Contributes to the assessment of the costs of building and mounting scenic and staging elements.
  • Co-ordinates all aspects of scenic/staging construction and installation from prep to restore, and participates actively in the building process, where required.
  • Assist with load in/load out of performance equipment
  • Assist with on-stage set up of performance equipment, including risers and musical equipment
  • Attend all rehearsals/sound checks for performances
  • Assist with all stage changes during the performances
  • Selecting the appropriate tools for a task and operating them in a safe manner
Qualification and Educational Requirements
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 2: must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 3: must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment
  • Has completed a formal theatre education
  • Experience supporting live music is preferred.
  • Experience working in a fly house an asset.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and multi-media and able to operate specialized equipment
  • Must have a working knowledge of the theories and practices that support this discipline
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Able to work with tight, changing timelines in a fast paced environment
  • Knowledgeable of related industry trends including the application of up to date techniques, and use of special materials and current health and safety standards
  • Able to apply professional theatre techniques and methods to provide the quality, efficiency and support level required by Performing Arts
Special Requirements
  • Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.
Employment Terms and
  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500-hour probationary period.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 2: this position pays between $22.59 and $25.85 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 3: this position pays between $27.17 and $31.51 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • This is a termed position from April 1, 2026 to September 29, 2026.
