As a member of the Diabetes Education Team, participates in developing, implementing and evaluating the Diabetes Education Centre (DEC) programs in accordance with the Vision and Mission statements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) and the VIHA Diabetes Education Program. Responsible for patient assessment and the teaching, in-group and individual settings, of individuals and families and staff with a variety of diabetes education needs. Care may occur in a variety of settings such as acute care, long term care, community, the client's home and virtual care. Utilizing knowledge and clinical expertise in diabetes education and treatment, functions as a clinical resource nurse, providing consultation and in-service to physicians, other program teams, community nurses and other health care team staff regarding the care and treatment of people with diabetes.Travel to other VIHA sites to provide diabetes education services is a requirement of this position and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And ExperienceGraduate of a recognized nursing program. Graduation from a recognized nursing program, or evidence of an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) certification or eligible for CDE certification to be obtained within three years of hire. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant. A minimum of three years' recent related experience in the care of diabetes and group teaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Demonstrated knowledge in the current theories, technologies and practices in the control of diabetes mellitus. Knowledge of Adult Education learning principles.Skills And Abilities
