
Heavy Equipment Operator (Afternoon Shift)

- Operates trucks (1/2 tonne and larger) or truck and trailer combinations exceeding 11,000 Kg., street sweepers, front-end loader, loader-mounted snow blowers, belt loaders, graders, backhoes, hand tools, and other equipment as assigned.
- Performs various manual seasonal road maintenance operations, which may include the operation of various tools and pieces of equipment.
- Acts as a lead hand overseeing work crews, setting up assigned job sites, reading and confirming locates for all jobs necessary, ensuring work site is safe and proper safety attire is worn. Responsible for ensuring equipment is safely operated and arranges sets up traffic control devices in accordance with an approved Traffic Control Plan and the Ontario Traffic Manual, Book 7.
- Performs daily circle check of assigned vehicles and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to roads vehicles and equipment as required. Ensures safety and security of assigned equipment and reports problems and damages to the Supervisor.
- Inspects, repairs and reports on safety and security of roads, structures, guardrails, culverts, curbs, sidewalks and medians, etc., as required.
- Responds to emergency situations, including seasonal events e.g. ice and snowstorms, flooding, etc., as required.
- Assists with training staff by providing instruction on the correct and safe use and/or maintenance of equipment and materials, as assigned.
- Must be available to be placed on stand-by, be prepared to work overtime during peak periods (e.g. snowstorms and emergencies), and ensures availability for such 'on call' duty and overtime as needed.
- Completes digital time sheets, open/close electronic work orders related to equipment and supplies used, including logs related to hours of work.
- Responsible for ensuring own compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, the corporate Occupational Health and Safety Policy and all other corporate policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties related to the position, which may occur in unplanned or emergency situations, including performing manual labour and activities performed by other job classes, all in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Agreement.
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarian Disability Act (AODA) and related policy and procedures.
- Successful completion of Secondary School Graduation Diploma or suitable equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years' related roads maintenance with two (2) years' related heavy equipment experience (e.g. backhoe, street sweeper, grader, etc.) with certificates of competency.
- Valid Class "DZ" license as issued by the Province of Ontario, and willingness to obtain a valid Class "AZ" driver's license at the Department's request.
- Successfully complete the T.J. Mahony Road Construction and Road Maintenance courses.
- Deemed to be a "competent worker" through the knowledge of all applicable Provincial and Municipal Regulations and standards, including, but not limited to, the Provincial Minimum Maintenance Standards, M.T.O. Commercial Vehicle Operator Regulations, Construction and Industrial Health & Safety Regulations and Health & Safety Act, Ontario Traffic Manual, and Traffic Control Manual, Book 7.
- Basic working knowledge of the Fisheries Act and Environmental Protection Act, and other relevant environmental legislation required when working on watercourses and ditches.
- Good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to interpret drawings, and work effectively and courteously with staff and the public, with minimal supervision are essential.
- Obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certificate in accordance with Department Policy.
- Maintain a valid Propane Operator's Certificate.
- Obtain and maintain Certificate in Ontario Traffic Manual, Book 7.
- Mostly outdoor work environment, with times working in the yard (indoors). Interaction with other workers and residents would be a standard process.
- Performs work in adverse work environments which may involve extreme weather conditions, excessive noise and/or fumes including year-round outdoor conditions, using appropriate safety devices and procedures. Frequent travel to various City sites (on a daily basis at minimum). Available to be on call after hours/weekends/holidays.
