Job Description:POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Administrator and instruction from the Behavioral Support Lead, the Behavioural Support Ontario Resident Care Assistant (BSO RCA) works collaboratively with the Pioneer Ridge Behavioral Support Team, Behavior Support Ontario, and the Pioneer Ridge Multidisciplinary team.The BSO Resident Care Assistant (RCA) works in a specialty role providing expertise and assistance related to activities of daily living (ADL) for residents living with behavioural challenges. As a member of the Pioneer Ridge “Embedded BSO Team”, will enhance the quality of life for residents with responsive behaviors by ensuring ADLs are being met in a manner that promotes acceptance, participation, and independence.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists staff of all disciplines who are working with a resident, to use frameworks such as P.I.E.C.E.S and UFirst to assess responsive behaviours/personal expressions, identify causes, formulate, and implement coordinated care plans and therapeutic interventions.
  • Assesses for aspects of risk and intervenes as appropriate.
  • Assists in reviewing and evaluating the recommendations, treatments and plan of care in consultation with the Behavioural Support Lead.
  • Assists in identifying the need, and prepares for, additional consultation and/or referrals to other services or specialties as required.
  • Participates in care conferences as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Provides hands on patient support, along with data collection and care planning; provides direction, reporting and required documentation.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others and demonstrates behaviours consistent with Pioneer Ridges Code of Conduct.
  • Documents all findings and interventions in a clear and concise manner in the residents’ medical record and other reports as required.
  • Models’ behaviour that is aligned with the values of Pioneer Ridge – Providing Premier Services.
  • Participates as a member of the Pioneer Ridge Behavioural Support Team to provide an exceptional experience for staff, families, and residents within a challenging and exciting health care environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education/Experience:
  • Degree or diploma in Developmental Social Work, Gerontology, or a related discipline; or
  • Completion of a recognized personal support worker program approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
  • Two years’ experience with clients in long-term care or residents in a Long-Term Care Home setting
Skills/Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill working with older adults presenting with or at risk for responsive behaviours that may be associated with dementia, complex mental health, substance use and/or other neurological conditions
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Must be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and current related software
  • Ability to implement best practice in dementia, delirium, mental health issues and their effect on persons, families, and caregivers, based on scope of practice.
  • Ability to foster cooperative and collaborative working relationships with inter-disciplinary teams, residents, family members and community team members.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with the Long-Term Care Act and Regulations specifically around Responsive Behaviour Program, Plans of Care and Activities of Daily Living
  • Sound understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Behavioral Supports Ontario embedded services.
  • Knowledge of Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA), P.I.E.C.E.S., and U-First! framework
Assets:
  • Training in Gentle Persuasive Approaches (“GPA”), U-FIRST, P.I.E.C.E.S., Montessori, Dementia Ability
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination at point of conditional offer
  • Prior to commencing employment, will be required to review and attest/affirm to all Pioneer Ridge Staff Immunization Policies
  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Must have successfully undergone a “two step” tuberculosis skin test within the 12 months prior to employment
  • Prior to commencing employment, must undergo a successful Offence & Professional Misconduct Declaration Process
  • Must successfully complete all mandatory training as required by the Corporation on an annual basis
