Candidate must have the ability to work 1-2 weekends a month. The ideal candidate would also be available over holidays and occasionally Mon-Fri 8-4pm as needed to replace full time staff on vacation. This position may provide an opportunity for part-time to full-time hours eventuallyThe incumbent will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Independently perform daily/weekend animal checks and husbandry for rodents and aquatic species
  • Document clinical cases and competently administer oral, topical and injectable treatments as directed by the veterinarian or supervisor
  • Wean pups following Carleton Universities Standard Operating Procedures
  • Able to lift and move large feed and bedding bags as required
  • Prepare cage and bottle supplies for daily husbandry
  • Restock supplies in all areas of the facility as required
  • Participate in laundry duties
  • Disinfect holding rooms and surgical suites
  • Monitor rodents post-operatively and assist with post-op care
  • Should be comfortable with euthanasia techniques and tissue collection
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills and work effectively as a team member
  • Works with large equipment such as a cage washer
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications:The incumbent must possess the following physical qualifications:
  • Ability to consistently stand and sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds
  • No known allergies to rats or mice
Education and Experience:The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
  • Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technology Diploma
  • Asset of one-year experience in a rodent husbandry
