- Develop relationships with project Team to ensure maximum operational productivity and maximum cost-effective utilisation of equipment and resources across the whole project.
- Maintain and enhance the mine planning and design all aspects of the mine workings. This will include designs for each bench/phase, waste dump, stockpile, rehabilitation activity and any other works. Communicate this process as a simple, auditable and robust system.
- Develop and provide rolling operational schedules.
- Prior to commencing mining operations in any strip, use the current geological model to calculate the amount and quality of ore within that bench.
- Conduct a reconciliation of the completed benches, using the post mining model to recalculate the amount and quality of ore by bench.
- Prior to each exploration program the location and throw of faults must be agreed between Thiess and the client.
- Revise the Geological Model to update and include any additional drilling and recent survey information. Deliver an electronic copy to the client on a regular basis.
- Management of the Drill and Blast Operations and subcontractors through the designated Supervisors and Contract Superintendents.
- Issue a monthly report detailing the work performed compared against the operational budget for that month.
- Provision of all operational statistical reporting functions for the Project.
- Provided written correspondence of any noticed deficit in the Geological model between projected and actual quantity of ore uncovered.
- Manage subcontractors for pit development operations and environmental operations through the designated Supervisors and Contract Superintendents.
- Provide information for completion of Project reporting requirements, in a timely and accurate manner.
- All assigned activities and reporting completed in accordance with the Project Business Calendar including responsible management of applicable budget.
- Cost reviews against Earned Budget complete with forecasts of Risks and Opportunities completed as per the Project Business Calendar.
- Monitor & review plant costs to maintain / reduce budget on all plant items as determined by the plant rates.
- Provide information for completion of Project reporting requirements.
- Assist the Project Manager with the implementation and maintenance of the Project Health & Safety Management Plan (HSMP).
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership through regular field inspections, audits, behavioural observations, job hazard analysis/observations. Achieving target safety metrics.
- Utilise Worker Safety Representative, Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) department, and Supervisor's feedback and implement corrective actions as appropriate.
- Ensure equipment is used in accordance with its design parameters and correct operating techniques
- Ensure that all necessary records are collated and filed in accordance with company policy, Statutory and contractual requirements.
- Play an active role in any relevant incident investigations to ensure the root causes are identified and where applicable, work practices adjusted accordingly in a timely manner.
- Management of geotechnical issues by providing advice and support to the site. Engage specialist advice as required. Maintain in conjunction with HSE Department and Geotechnical Principle Hazard Management Plan (PHMP).
- Plan, guide, direct and counsel direct reports to ensure performance and timing targets are met (monthly reporting)
- Ensure familiarity with and conformance to the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and manage in line with Environmental Programs and cultural plans.
- Demonstrate visible environmental leadership through field audits, job hazard analysis/ observations, and Environmental Inspections/Audits/Checklists as required and set out in Synergy.
- Provide clear performance expectations to personnel and reinforce correct behaviour through recognition and encouragement as well as application of disciplinary procedures.
- Work respectfully and collaboratively with the Union, as applicable
- The performance and development management process is implemented and followed to review the performance expectations and personal aspirations of direct reports.
- Identify and participate in the cross training and development of Technical Services team
- Achieve effective communication with all internal customers - enhance coordination between own department and other departments by maintaining a good working liaison with relevant personnel.
- Provide to the client, daily, weekly and monthly production reports in an agreed electronic format.
- Work in compliance at all times with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), including participation in risk assessments, adherence to safe work practices and reporting hazards as per the Internal Responsibility System.
- Contribute positively to a respectful work environment in compliance with the Code of Conduct and the Healthy, Safe and Respectful Workplace policy.
- Work in compliance with all policies and procedures and the Employee Handbook.
- Ensure regional governance processes are aligned to Thiess Governance System
- Manage data preparation for periodic reviews and reconciliations.
- Act as a conduit between the Corporate Technical Services team and Thiess Americas teams.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Excellent Communication and presentation skills - verbal and written ·
- High level of proficiency in MS Office, Vulcan, Deswik, XPAC or SPRY Software's, Block Model creation, 3D Dig.
- Knowledge of planning and scheduling best practice methodologies.
- Knowledge of relevant provincial and national regulations, guidelines and Canadian standards.
- Minimum 8-12 Years experience in a broad range of Mine Engineering and Senior Mining Engineer roles in open pit metals mining. A significant portion of this should have been spent on-site.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and complete a life of mine planning process from Block Model creation through scheduling, haulage modelling, generation of reports for estimators and mine plan report documentation.
- Experience with feasibility studies and financial analysis.
- Generation of Budget and Forecast Mine Plans for operating sites.
- Practical experience in risk management in Mine Design.
- Authorization to work lawfully in the Canada without sponsorship from Thiess is required (Applicants who qualify as an Intra-Company Transfer under the International Mobility Program may receive assistance from Thiess)
- Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline and years (Master's degree preferred).
- Professional certification/registration in good standing as a Professional Engineer, or an Engineer in Training (EIT), from the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) (Geotechnical), Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo) registration with Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO), or, Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech) certification with Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
- Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; may be required to flex hours on occasion based on operational requirements.
- May require local/occasional travel. Travel frequency/distance will vary based on business needs.
