
Nurse Practitioner – Outpatient Cancer Clinics, Regional Cancer Centre

- Assesses patients and families through multiple strategies, including comprehensive admission history and interview, advanced physical examination, interval assessments and the interpretation of diagnostic testing to determine need for medical, nursing or allied health care.
- Communicates significant clinical findings to the attending physician, and facilitates ongoing communication of patient progress and plan of care to the health care team.
- Initiates, orders, tailors and evaluates / discontinues selected medical and nursing therapy (including pharmacologic therapy) within the specialty scope of practice and consistent with practice guidelines
- Facilitates patient care by consulting with the patient / family and multidisciplinary team to formulate, initiate, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive and collaborative patient centred plan of care, ensuring effective and efficient use of resources.
- Performs specialty-specific diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in accordance with scope of practice, approved medical directives for controlled acts and established practice guidelines.
- Teaches patients/families with focus on health promotion, enablement, disease prevention and impact of disease or disability on patient and family.
- Facilitates communication and collaboration among members of the health care team and refers to appropriate members of the team.
- Writes/dictates admissions, consultations, progress notes and discharge summary reports.
- Evaluates patient care outcomes and nursing practice issues to ensure the highest possible quality of care.
- Completion of patient treatment plans as required.
- Opportunity to learn and perform bone marrow aspirates/biopsies and other procedures as required
- Providing leadership to educational activities/programs.
- Facilitating and providing educational opportunities and programs, in collaboration with the Nurse Educator, for nursing, medical and allied health students and staff for the enhancement of specialized knowledge and skills related to the specialty area.
- Mentor/Preceptor of students (graduate and undergraduate) and other interdisciplinary students as required in their clinical experience with evaluation of performance.
- Engaging in joint activities with Faculties of Nursing, and other academic faculties and organizations through collaborative projects, research and cross appointments.
- The development, implementation and evaluation of quality management programs / initiatives, care delivery models, practice standard / guidelines / policies and procedures and associated health outcomes and resource utilization, in collaboration with the leadership teams.
- Identify patterns and trends in health care and patient care outcomes and develop alternate approaches in relation to patient care situations.
- Participates on committees relevant to patient care issues.
- Promotes advanced nursing practice in program planning, policy making and problem solving.
- Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
- Minimum 5 years of recent and relevant Registered Nurse experience in oncology required
- Minimum 3 years of recent and relevant Nurse Practitioner experience in oncology preferred
- Experience with protocols and prescribing of chemotherapies therapies and supportive therapies including blood products required
- Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with physicians, inter-professional team members, and other stakeholders
- Possesses highly developed assessment, analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, with demonstrated competency in information and communication technology
- Demonstrated excellent organizational and coordination skills and the ability to prioritize multiple competing workload demands
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, support and critical analysis in stressful, complex clinical and emotional situations

- Registered Nurse and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) required
- Master in Nursing/Master of Science in Nursing with successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program from a recognized school of graduate studies required
- Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the Extended Class (EC) as an NP (adult) or NP (primary health care) required
- Recent (within the last 12 months) certification in chemotherapy administration required, demonstration of annual recertification from a recognized institution (de Souza Institute/ Oncology Nurses Society [ONS])
- Basic Cardio Life Saving (BCLS) required
- CON (C) or equivalent preferred
- Additional specialty education in Oncology preferred i.e. de Souza Hematology Courses
- Active member of Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) preferred
