Merit Contractors Association of Manitoba (Merit) is a member-driven, not-for-profit organization representing open-shop construction contractors across the province. Established in the 1990s, Merit was founded to advocate for open-shop employers and to provide competitive benefits programs that support the attraction and retention of a skilled workforce. Today, the organization represents a significant portion of Manitoba's construction industry and plays an important role in supporting its members through advocacy, workforce solutions, and business services.Working closely with contractors, industry partners, and government stakeholders, Merit advances policies that promote fair access to construction opportunities and supports a competitive, flexible labour environment. Through its group benefits offerings and member services, the organization provides practical tools that enable contractors to remain competitive while contributing to the broader strength of Manitoba's construction sector.This is an important time to join Merit as the organization sharpens its focus and strengthens its position within an evolving industry landscape. In this role, the President will have the opportunity to continue positioning Merit as a leading voice for open-shop contractors while advancing its advocacy efforts and overall impact across the construction sector.Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with members and key stakeholders, the President will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the organization, strengthening its advocacy mandate, and ensuring the continued operational and financial sustainability of Merit.Position Overview:
  • Champion Merit's commitment to open-shop advocacy, promoting fair competition, effective representation, and the interests of members across the construction industry.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the organization, working closely with the Board of Directors to define and execute Merit's strategic priorities and long-term vision.
  • Lead and advance Merit's advocacy efforts, strengthening its position as a credible and influential voice for open-shop construction contractors with government and industry stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members, government officials, industry partners, and other key stakeholders to support effective advocacy and member engagement.
  • Oversee the organization's operations, including member services, benefits programs, and internal administration, ensuring efficient and effective delivery.
  • Identify and develop opportunities to enhance and diversify revenue streams, supporting the financial sustainability of the organization and continued investment in member services.
  • Elevate the profile of Merit within the construction industry and broader business community through strategic communications and public engagement.
  • Ensure strong governance practices, working closely with the Board to support decision-making, policy development, and organizational accountability.
Ideal Qualifications and Experience:
  • You bring senior leadership experience, ideally within an association, advocacy organization, or industry-facing environment.
  • You have demonstrated experience in government relations, communications, public affairs, or advocacy, with the ability to influence policy and navigate complex stakeholder environments.
  • You bring strong relationship-building capabilities and a proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including boards, members, and government.
  • You have experience operating within a membership-based organization or a comparable environment with multiple stakeholder interests.
  • You bring sound business acumen, including experience overseeing budgets, HR and financial and organizational operations.
  • You have demonstrated success leading teams and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and performance.
  • You are an effective communicator with the ability to represent an organization publicly and position it credibly with external audiences.
  • Experience within construction, trades, or a related industry is considered an asset, as is familiarity with labour relations or policy environments.
