The successful candidate will be responsible for cleaning up litter, biohazards, and other debris from the downtown core and other areas of the city. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be physically fit, and be able to work independently and as part of a team.What will you do?Search for and dispose of waste including litter, biohazards (feces, vomit, needles, etc.), shopping carts, and other large items (mattresses, couches, pallets, etc.)Report the details and location of the waste they clean on the Quick Capture app for tracking through a smartphoneWork around vulnerable populations including persons experiencing homelessness, addiction, and/or mental health issues who may be violent, aggressive, and inebriated and behave unpredictablyWear specialized PPE (cut-resistant pants, gloves and sleeves, tyvek suits, respirators) to protect against hazards common in this type of work such as sharps, needles, weapons, drugs, and trapsPerform routed work within the Center City created zonesPerform reactionary work via SAP notifications and Inspector-found deficienciesUpon arrival at a work area, perform a site assessment for the presence of hazards in accordance with the Center City Special Waste Removal SOPRemove all biohazards, needles, chemicals, drugs, etc. from the site in a safe manner - including using sharps containers, biohazard containers, etc.Ensure that the sites are clean and returned to their previous statePerform a visual assessment of the site for any hazards in shrubs or trees in and around the siteUnload bagged material at collection points using prescribed methods, and place all material in appropriate dumpstersReport unusual situations to the crew lead, including mechanical problems, tools or equipment issues, environmental issues, etc.Perform routed collection of needle boxes throughout the City of EdmontonPerform responsive collection of individual needles as reported through the 311 app by citizens in a timely mannerQualificationsGrade 10 education or equivalentOne year of experience working in a physically demanding roleExperience working with vulnerable populationsExperience working with potential biohazardsExperience using hand and power toolsAssets:Experience working in the City of Edmonton's downtown coreExperience operating a variety of vehicles, including trucks and all-terrain vehiclesExperience using a smartphone to track work progressKnowledge of the City of Edmonton's waste management regulationsKnowledge of the City of Edmonton's safety proceduresSkills required for success:Ability to work in a team environmentAbility to lift heavy material/objects for extended periods in all weather conditionsBasic computer skillsAbility to communicate effectively with the general public, team, and external stakeholdersKnowledge of safety hazardsAbility to maintain accurate recordsExperience working with a variety of cleaning equipment, including pressure washers and sharps containersKnowledge of the City of Edmonton's parks and green spacesKnowledge of the City of Edmonton's homeless population and the challenges they faceAlignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( )Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusionConditions of Employment:Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditionsMust be able to lift heavy objectsMust be able to work in a physically demanding roleSuccessful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this positionCompliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this positionValid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent).
