- Provide both conceptual and detailed design services for substation capital and reactive maintenance projects
- Co-ordinate projects, prepare cost estimates, and collaborate with key stakeholders, including: equipment suppliers, contractors, and other utilities
- Perform engineering studies and/or calculations, including: short circuit analysis, load flows, arc flash hazard assessments, protective device coordination, equipment selection & sizing, protection relay settings, and ground grid design
- Develop equipment testing and commissioning plans, witness and approve equipment FAT, SAT testing
- Configure and program SEL and GE station control systems, protection relays and distribution system network communications equipment
- Prepare, provide guidance or assist engineering staff with the creation or modification of single line and three line diagrams, AC/DC electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and electrical layout and elevation drawings
- Research, evaluate, test and recommend station equipment
- Provide technical field support for operations staff
- Develop standards and specifications
- Plan and design processes, operational procedures, and safe work practices
- Participate in short term and long term strategic planning
- Prepare engineering or business reports (both oral and written)
- Review, develop or present business proposals
- Participate on committees or project teams as required on a wide variety of business initiatives
- Support senior management on ad-hoc assignments
- Mentoring and training designers and team members
- Provide engineering support for Metrolinx transit expansion projects across Toronto-including LRT, subway, and GO Corridor works-by coordinating design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance activities while ensuring Toronto Hydro standards and asset protection requirements are met.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred)
- Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario
- 6+ years of Engineering experience
- Must hold valid Class “G” Drivers License.
- Proficiency in IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging protocol, including configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of peer-to-peer protection and control signals within utility communication networks is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of protection and control concepts preferred
- Familiarity with various station equipment, including switchgear, breakers and power transformers; proficiency in programming GE and SEL protection relays preferred
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTUs and data concentrators; station network topologies; relevant ethernet and serial communication protocols; copper, fiber optic and wireless communication systems preferred
- Experience in the development of protection philosophies and the application of substation protection schemes
- Proficiency in system modeling using engineering analysis software such CYME, ETAP or SKM an asset
- Knowledge of, and ability to look-up and correctly interpret relevant industry standards, including: CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE; relevant code, including: OESC, NESC, DSC, TSC, OBC, EUSR and UWPC; and relevant legislation, including: OHSA and Reg. 22/04
- Familiarity with distribution system automation technologies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through report writing and delivering presentations
- Demonstrated competence in computer programming
- Project management skills with the ability to organize the project, work with key stakeholders, manage project risks, and deliver projects on time and within budget
- General knowledge of overhead and underground distribution system design
- Customer focused and demonstrates a pro-active service orientation; must be able to meet customer needs in a flexible but cost-effective manner
