Transport Physician
STARS
- Calgary, AB
- Contract
- Full-time
- This contract may be eligible for extension after the locum period. State date may be flexible.
- STARS Calgary Transport Physicians (TP) facilitate Critical Care Patient Transfers in Southern Alberta and Southeastern British Columbia via both remote consult or by physically attending the patient;
- STARS Transport Physicians do on average 24-32 hours on-call per month. This time is split between regular on-call duties, Base Days, and Emergency Link Centre Dispatch Physician days;
- All TPs must have 24/7 access to ConnectCare and be available immediately by cell phone while on-call.
- Phone calls are primarily comprised of Interfacility Transfer Requests where the TP ensures that the patient is medically suitable for transport, that the most suitable transport modality is assigned, and that the most appropriate medical expertise accompanies the patient. Scene calls do not typically involve the TP unless the Air Medical Crew request online consultation for management or disposition. Complex scene calls (Mass Casualty Incidents) will also require TP consultation and/or presence;
- Regular on-call duties do not require presence on-base, however, the TP must be within 15 minutes of a heli-pad and be ready with flight suit and requisite gear should a particular patient case require TP presence;
- Base days are an expectation for all TPs and require the TP to be physically present at the Calgary base for Air Medical Crew flight duties between 0700-1900. Each physician is expected to attend a minimum of 4 Base Days per year to fly on all scene calls and interfacility transfers on those days;
- During base time, TPs attend the 0700 crew call, orient themselves to the aircraft, train on critical care equipment (IV pumps, blood gas analyzer, ventilator and other equipment as required), perform case reviews and practice and run simulations on the Human Patient Simulator;
- All TPs are expected to spend 1-2 8-hour shifts per month on-base in the Emergency Link Centre as part of their total monthly on-call hours. These Dispatch Physician shifts provide a unique opportunity for TPs to work directly with ELC Communications Specialists in answering requests from the 3 Alberta Emergency Dispatch Centres (South, Central, and North). The TP will obtain further information from first responders in order to stratify these calls. During these Dispatch Physician shifts, the TP will still be responsible for their normal call duties by offering consultant support for Interfacility Transfer requests and providing medical consultation for Air medical crews;
- Undertake additional duties as required (Educational Rounds presentations; Foundation/Charity presentations, attend TP Meetings and updates);
- TPs will periodically need to fly on fixed wing flights and/or use ground ambulances to aid in critical care patient transfers;
- TPs will be required to participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.
- Be an acute care practitioner in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, or ICU;
- Be licensed to practice in Alberta with an active certificate of registration for independent practice and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta;
- Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
- Demonstrate commitment to quality assurance and quality improvement;
- Have a thorough knowledge of current and new/emerging quality guidelines and standards for critical care transport and pre-hospital medicine;
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Have a demonstrated track record of leading high acuity teams;
- Participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals, as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.
