The Research Manager provides complex research, administrative and project management t for large-scale, collaborative research activities and projects, specifically the JDRF Centre of Excellence (JDRF-CoE) at UBC, as well as day-to-day operations of the Childhood Diabetes Laboratories. The incumbent manages grant finances and budgets, personnel and student appointments, ethics applications and ongoing updates, grant submissions, and contract submission. Th incumbent provides management for patient partnership activities and management of personnel and financial resources related to research as well as knowledge translation.Organizational StatusThe UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health.The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff, distributed across British Columbia. There are nine divisions in the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).The Research Manager reports to Dr. Bruce Verchere for JDRF-CoE activities and Dr. Francis Lynn for Diabetes group administration. The incumbent work closely with UBC academic and clinical researchers, Department of Surgery administrative staff, trainees, funders, BCCHR and PHSA staff, as well as patient partners.Work PerformedJDRF Centre of ExcellenceDevelops and implements work plans and timelines for Centre’s research projects and initiatives.Coordinates and oversees the progress for various Centre activities such as Annual Meetings, Seed Grant Competitions, and Training Programs.Manages and develops budget forecasts and manages expenditures for Centre’s research projects to ensure that funds are spent as approved by JDRF and within budget.Advises on UBC financial policies and procedures, and liaises with UBC Research Finance to resolve issues and prepare financial reporting to JDRF.Plans and manages logistics for Centre group research meetings.Coordinates the tracking of research progress according to project plans approved by JDRF, and assists Investigators to identify, problem solve and remove barriers to successful research project completion.Monitors and communicates research project status by providing up-to-date financial statements and milestone progress reports to stakeholders.Creates grant applications, ethics applications and regulatory submissions.Coordinates the strategic development of knowledge translation activities, including patient engagement events.Participates in ongoing regulatory training to support the Centre’s overall goal of translating type 1 diabetes therapies from discovery to the clinic.Manages a variety of initiatives for the overall lab management and management of specific research projects, including clinical trials.Childhood Diabetes LaboratoriesLeads and manages research administrative activities for the Childhood Diabetes LaboratoriesMonitors and manages research grants and trainee fellowships to ensure funds are used in accordance with budget and policies and within funding periods.Manages and develops budget forecasts and financial documents for accounts within UBC and PHSA.Provides guidance and training regarding UBC financial procedures.Manages budget forecasts, budget estimates for grants, financial reports and monitors research account spending for accounts within UBC and PHSA. Resolves any financial issues or problems that may arise.Creates grant applications, ethics applications and regulatory submissions.Coordinates clinical related research activities for assigned projects.Coordinates site-specific on-boarding and off-boarding of lab members.Develops and manages administrative workflows in the lab to ensure smooth operations.Manages site-specific on-boarding and off-boarding procedures for lab members.Contributes to a respectful, inclusive working environment.Performs other responsibilities, as required.Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position exercises professional judgement and initiative in the management of various research projects. The ability to work collaboratively and exercise sound judgment is essential. Failure to plan or follow up on initiatives and poor judgment or errors would have an adverse effect on the research productivity and operational management of the funded projects. An error within the realm of a research study may result in biased or incomplete data and skewed study results. Failure to act in a professional, tactful manner would have an adverse effect on campus and community relations.Errors in the management of research accounts, as well as errors in reporting procedures, could result in a waste of financial resources, non-renewal of research funding, or loss of currently held funding. Inadequate documentation, organization, communication, and planning may adversely affect the reputation of the Centre, and the credibility of individual investigators.Supervision Received

None. However, the Research Manager will train and provide guidance to new staff and trainees.Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.Preferred QualificationsAt least two years of experience working with research and researchers within an academic community including familiarity with UBC Workday, CIHR grants processes and research ethics (RiSE).Experience with bio-medical laboratory procedures.Ability to exercise judgment, tact, discretion, and diplomacy.Excellent interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments, and organize and prioritize workload under pressure to meet deadlines without compromising the quality of outcomes or accuracy of data.Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.Experience with managing and interpreting financial statements.Experience with research project management, knowledge translation, ethics submissions and grant application and management.Proficiency with Microsoft Office, basic graphic design, and webpage maintenance.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.Ability to contribute to a respectful, cooperative and supportive work environment.
