This role will be focused on the delivery of various fire protection projects, including design of sprinkler, special suppression, and fire alarm systems; Fire Code analyses, Fire Hazard Assessments, and system testing/commissioning.A passion to continue to learn and excellent communication skills are required. The successful candidate will work in a team environment, working closely with both junior and senior staff to deliver projects, and will have the opportunity to deal directly with clients for proposals and delivery of projects.The position will involve the application fire and life safety principles to fire protection systems design projects as well as the assessment of existing fire protection systems. The position requires the ability to assess conditions of existing systems, analyze performance and Code conformance, prepare written reports with cost estimates, complete design calculations for fire protection systems, complete drawings and specifications, undertake site review and verification of systems, and advise clients on recommended fire protection system features.In addition to fire protection design, the position may also involve the application of provincial and national building and fire codes, standards, and best practice guidelines related to the storage, use and handling of hazardous materials.Although not mandatory, knowledge in the fundamental principles of fire dynamics, behavior of materials in fire, and human behavior in fire is desired.Responsibilities:The successful candidate will support the delivery of fire protection systems projects and will assist engineers and project managers in the analysis, design and review of fire protection systems. Typical activities for this position are:· Design fire protection systems including suppression and detection and other related systems;· Assess fire and life safety performance of new and existing building fire protection systems using applicable Codes and Standards;· Prepare technical reports;· Draft fire protection systems and details using AutoCAD or, alternatively, mark up design concepts using Bluebeam Revu;· Complete design calculations including using hydraulic calculation software;· Participate in design reviews, shop drawings reviews, construction site visits and verifications for various fire protection systems;· Conduct site audits of fire protection systems performance, as-built conditions, and Code conformance;· Review contract documents, including drawings and specifications for Code conformance;· Participate on project teams including other fire protection personnel, contractors and other technical disciplines for successful project delivery;· Investigate, advise, and solve unusual design problems;· Conduct site visits to gather data on existing conditions and review construction;· Prepare reports and other technical communication· Work with project teams including other staff, other technical disciplines and contractors for successful project delivery;· Assist in the preparation of project proposals and liaise with clients.Qualifications:· Degree in Engineering (fire safety/protection preferred, however, mechanical or electrical also acceptable)· Alternative to Engineering Degree, Diploma in fire protection engineering technology; may also consider Diploma in mechanical or electrical engineering technology.· Minimum 4 years of relevant experience, consulting experience preferred; however design experience in a Contractor environment may be considered.· Experience in fire protection system design, fire alarm system design, or related systems design.· Self-motivated, problem-solving and solution-oriented, high level of accountabilityJob Type: RegularJob Profile: For internal use Fire Protection Consultant IIIMorrison Hershfield, now Stantec is committed to having an inclusive and diverse workforce, with recruitment free of discrimination, ensuring all candidates are given a fair opportunity for employment.
