Research Technician

The Sunnybrook Research Institute, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is seeking an applicant to fulfill a temporary, full-time position as Research Technician under the supervision of Dr. Marc Jeschke. The position will be available for a one -year contract with possibility for renewal.

Dr. Marc Jeschke is a Senior Scientist, division of Biological Sciences at Sunnybrook Research Institute, and the director of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre (RTBC).

About the lab:

The RTBC is the largest burn centre in Canada and treats patients with minor and major burn injuries. The results from these studies advance current management of severely burned patients and provide new insights in skin biology as well as tissue regeneration.

Key responsibilities (including but not limited to):
  • Process, culture, and biobank human specimens.
  • Data entry and management of biobank.
  • Help develop and edit relevant documents and SOPs for clinical studies as well as provide technical support for clinical trial and related activities.
  • Culture cell lines and mammalian primary cells with aseptic techniques.
  • Develop, optimize and extract cells from various tissue samples.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.
  • Assist the research team on daily lab tasks and follow guidelines.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in biological sciences (or equivalent related discipline).
  • Must have familiarity with standard laboratory procedures (cell culturing, Western blotting, PCR)
  • Must have animal experience including colony management and genotyping.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
  • Must be able to communicate and interact with staff in a clear, cordial, and professional manner.
  • Must be highly organized and able to prioritize effectively.
  • Must have the capacity to work independently with little supervision.
  • Must be flexible to work occasional evenings and/or weekend hours.
  • Must be willing and able to rapidly learn new things.
  • Cell isolation/characterization experience from human or animal tissues is an asset.
  • Flow cytometry experience is an asset.
