- Assume overall responsible for the day-to-day operations of the care unit/service by supervising staff and assigning work; conducting individual performance planning and feedback session; monitoring and evaluating staff performance and providing constructive feedback through formal and informal opportunities; providing ongoing coaching and mentoring to facilitate performance improvement and the achievement of individual objectives; working with the Director and Professional Practice and Academic leadership to manage individual performance involving corrective action or discipline; recruiting and hiring staff; coordinating the orientation process for new staff; and promoting and supporting staff and student learning in the care area.
- Coordinate patient care delivery by developing unit/service specific policies, procedures and standards of care; assessing staffing needs based on planned patient activity and acuity and ensuring appropriate resources are available to meet patient care requirements; maintaining knowledge of clinical practice in order to provide leadership in the team; ensuring completion of staffing assignments, consulting as necessary and revising according to activity and staff changes; providing support to staff in planning and prioritizing patient care delivery; acting as initial support person for families in crisis; acting as contact for patients and families in conflict situations; and addressing inter-program coordination and operational issues that may arise.
- Provide leadership by participating in the development and implementation of PHSA/BCCA policies and procedures at the unit/service level; promoting and ensuring the program’s model of care for a unit is implemented; promoting a supportive, collaborative environment for all staff using a team approach; facilitating change; participating in program/organizational committees; facilitating the achievement of program goals; modeling conflict resolution skills; mediating and negotiating issues that arise within the unit/service or department; facilitating the implementation of program, organizational and professional standards; and serving as a professional role model.
- Carry out operational planning/financial management by monitoring budgets for assigned unit/service area; authorizing and approving overtime and operational expenditures; tracking and analyzing patient activity/acuity and utilization data; tracking and analyzing workload and staffing information to ensure effective use of human resources; assessing, planning and reviewing unit’s/service’s operational performance in conjunction with program direction through the Director; and participating in the operating planning process for the unit/service.
- Evaluate equipment, products and supplies to ensure efficient and effective inventory and purchasing processes, as well as the identification and follow-up of maintenance issues; manages efficient and effective processes for acquisition and inventory of equipment, products and supplies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
- Five (5) year’s recent related experience, including two (2) year’s relevant clinical experience, and two (2) year’s supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Effective interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Ability to supervise.
