a. Works at the Bulk Item and HHW Depot
- Assists, educates and directs members of the public for the proper use of the site by communicating with the public for the appropriate procedures of handling materials for specific locations for waste disposal.
- Works in extreme weather conditions with minimal shelter during extreme heat and cold and during weather events.
- Deal with aggravated, hostile and belligerent customers on a daily basis.
- Answers questions related to all waste management programs and the proper disposal of waste.
- Safely handles and prepares Household Hazardous Waste by identifying the substances by type, category, and class, for safe storage and preparing materials for shipping by designation and labeling.
- Keeps the site cleaned, maintained, and free of any debris which may cause injury. Able to contain any spill or spills of hazardous material that may impact health and environment.
- Completes minor repairs at Enviro Depot facility
- Understand regulations for safe handling and spill containment of hazardous waste.
- Handles monetary transactions by operating debit machine for service fees and track all purchases for end of shift totals.
- Uses a tablet, computer or cell phone for communication and data entry with the work management system.
- Hold a valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certificate.
- Operates a trackless with various attachments such as the leaf loader, snow blower, sidewalk plow, boom flail mower, front flail mower, salter, sweeper, winter sidewalk routes etc.
- Operates the loader for cleaning and moving debris at the yard waste facility and compact materials in 20-, 30-, and 40-yard bins for safe transportation to landfill.
- Performs winter control duties, such as but not inclusive of:
- shovels snow from City property’s and walkways.
- Operates snow plow/underbody plow on a route while following standard operating procedures,
- Operates a salt truck on a route while following standard operating procedures
- Waste Collection: collects recyclables and or garbage while operating a one-person waste collection vehicle.
- Collects the recycling from individual properties throughout the City:
- Lifts recycling into truck,
- Operates attached hydraulic recycling lift for recyclables,
- Adheres to the City of Woodstock’s safe operating procedures and policies
- and wears all necessary PPE including but not limited to CSA approved reflective safety wear.
- Drives a one-person recycling truck:
- follows a preset route, collecting recyclables at every property.
- observes Highway Traffic Act and municipal by-law regulations,
- transports recycling to the transfer station and empties truck as directed.
- Collects the garbage from individual properties throughout the City:
- lifts garbage into truck,
- safe operation of the garbage packer,
- adheres to the City of Woodstock’s safe operating procedures and policies and wears all necessary PPE including but not limited to CSA approved reflective safety wear,
- Operates attached hydraulic garbage container lift.
- follows a preset route, collecting waste at every property
- observes Highway Traffic Act and municipal by-law regulations,
- transports garbage to the land fill site and empties truck as directed.
- Performs various manual labour duties such as, but not limited to:
- Works on the asphalt crew:
- sets up traffic control,
- assist in performing crack sealing activities
- shovel and rakes asphalt,
- operates asphalt roller, paver, tack coat sprayer and mini recycler
- sweeps up loose asphalt,
- operates self-propelled road saw
- Works on the concrete crew:
- sets up traffic control measures,
- follows safe excavation practices for the removal of existing concrete
- construct and install wooden concrete forms,
- shovels gravel, places and finishes concrete
- operates self-propelled road saw
- Works on the sewer crew
- performs sewer repairs to sanitary and storm sewer systems
- follows safe excavation practices
- sets up traffic control measures
- set pipes to grade and backfills trenches using proper construction techniques
- Repairs manholes and catch basins:
- enters manholes using safety equipment and following confined space entry procedure,
- follows safe excavation practices
- sets frame and grates to grade
- sets up traffic control measures
- Operates the Triaxle Roll Off truck for moving the 20-, 30-, and 40-yard bins in the yard, to the Transfer Station and the Oxford County Landfill.
- Applies cold patch to roads needing repairs and reports work completed to the Supervisor.
- Performs traffic maintenance duties
- Set up traffic control measures
- Fix or replace traffic signs
- Paint pavement markings
- Performs other duties as required, such as, but not inclusive of:
- acts as a mechanics helper,
- paints and cleans equipment
- washing, fueling and general equipment maintenance
- Perform annual sewer inspections
- Perform annual sign inspections
- Grade 10 education or equivalent,
- Valid Class “DZ” Driver’s License,
- Excellent physical condition.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Tow motor certification
- Subject to working in all weather conditions.
- Works in dirty conditions and is required to do repetitive heavy lifting.
