- Learn the customer process and become the local expert in it, to support the design, integration, and verification of the machines/tools/systems.
- Prepare component and system level analysis, calculations, or studies including but not limited to:
- Structural integrity
- Functional capability, drive sizing - speeds, strokes, loads, etc.
- Accuracy, Gauge R&R
- Pressure/flow/heat transfer
- Compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Prepare (or assist in preparation of) technical project documents such as Failure Modes and Effects Analyses and Safety Risk Assessments, ALARA reports, installation/commissioning plans, operating sequence/flowcharts, execution storyboards, operating and maintenance manuals, etc.
- Assist in compiling and documenting design requirements, technical/functional specifications, etc.
- Learn, understand and flow down customer and industry requirements, including applicable codes and standards, to ensure overall machine compliance.
- Prepare vendor technical specifications and interface with vendors of process critical third party equipment, including acceptance testing and buy-off of equipment at vendor site.
- Using tools such as a Verification Matrix, plan for verification of all design/system requirements.
- Lead (or support) requirements verification by evaluating engineering drawings and specifications for conformance to design inputs/requirements, performing analysis (calculations, simulations, etc.) and testing (POP testing, design validation testing, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing).
- Lead (or support) planning of Acceptance Testing, including preparation of test plans, ensuring availability of mock-ups, fixtures, test support equipment, etc., and performing test execution with the customer.
- Be (or support) the project technical lead in Design Plan preparation, understand responsibilities for implementation, and perform design related activities in accordance with the Design Plan.
- Perform (or assist in) problem solving and coordination of project engineering work.
- Provide project support during system startup, integration and buy-off.
- Lead (or participate in) design reviews with customers, vendors, and internal design groups
- Lead (or participate in) project technical risk mitigation activities during design stage, preparing CTRAs (concept technical risk assessments), and performing POP (proof of principle) testing.
- Manage (or support the technical lead in managing) project technical risk throughout the project: highlight high risk areas and create mitigation plans to reduce risk.
- Work with ‘process critical’ third party equipment vendors to ensure compliance with requirements and adherence to budget and schedule.
- A post-secondary degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems Design, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, or equivalent.
- A thorough understanding of machine design and build, and structured problem solving.
- 3 to 5 years of industry experience
- Competent in mechanical CAD software (SolidWorks preferred), capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts, with a working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
- Prior experience in mechanical, electrical, controls or systems engineering support, preferably in an automation environment and with customer interaction is an asset.
- Experience in nuclear tooling/equipment development is an asset.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to lead or work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
- Work in conformance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures and compliance to legislative requirements
- Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods
- Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts, defect in any equipment or protective device, and any accidents/incidents to the supervisor
- Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for assigned tasks
- Attend all required health, safety and environmental training
- Assist in investigating accidents/incidents where applicable
- Refrain from engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct
