- Work with different experienced surveyors to make their work flow smoother, sharing the physical nature of a survey layout or data collection task. Accept open mentorship and advice as you build your experience in the career path of survey.
- Take responsibility for personal equipment, PPE, outerwear, vests, tapes, lighting, and all necessary gear; avoid solely relying on company-issued equipment. Speak up if you need something or have questions about process and specific tasks.
- Manage ancillary equipment, ensuring everything is functional, properly placed, and maintained; adjust and tune-up tripods and sharpen tools as needed; calibrate rods for extensions and flag nails for readiness.
- Assist with handling the survey equipment for tasks, including determining shooting locations, required spacing, and efficiently positioning the rod and rod heights.
- Communicate information clearly and maintain situational awareness and safety protocols.
- Assist with handling the prism, rod, and ancillary gear for layout tasks; navigate quickly to points, prepare sites for point installation as required, and set and markup hub/nail, stakes, and lathe.
- Track completed work and ensure accurate documentation.
- Work around active traffic corridors and in challenging environments such as steep, slippery, bushy terrain, or hard asphalt for extended periods without interruption.
- Clear bush as necessary, recover survey evidence or layout, and dig search holes as required.
- Assist surveyor with setting control points, backsights, and instrument setups.
- Efficiently set layout points, including hammering hubs, nails, setting scribes, targets, etc.
- Take initiative in decision-making processes, anticipate needs such as backsight setups, and know when to stop and set new control points.
- Learn instrument operations and data collection/layout routines to support surveying activities effectively.
- Do you like working in the Outdoors? Do you like working with multiple customers who need your information?
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification in surveying or related field preferred.
- Proven experience in a similar role or relevant construction fieldwork like layout carpentry, civil structures hand on installations.
- Ability to work effectively in varying outdoor conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Basic understanding of surveying instruments and equipment is an asset.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies in surveying.
