- Support students with complex non-academic issues that are impacting their academic pursuits by providing timely and coordinated services with on and off campus resources, including acting as an entry point for students to submit an account of their non-academic issue in the Office of the Dean of Students and responding as appropriate under policy
- Provide assessment, response, and management for students in distress and those impacted by misconduct in an appropriate manner that is consistent with U of A policies and procedures.
- Collect and review all facts pertaining to a case, drawing on mental health and case management knowledge and skills when making an initial assessment and formulates intervention plans in collaboration with colleagues.
- Consult with the Manager, Student Care Coordination and/or Assistant Dean, Student Life on cases that may need to be escalated to the Dean of Students, that appear to be an emerging risk (moving towards imminent or urgent) or on reports that are complex and sensitive.
- Has a thorough understanding of, and act in accordance with, the Helping Individuals At Risk Policy and Procedures, the Protocol for Urgent Cases of Disruptive, Threatening or Violent Conduct disciplinary policies at the University of Alberta (e.g. those outlined in the Student Conduct Policy, Student Misconduct Complaint Procedure, the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy, the Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy), and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) Act.
- Maintains student confidentiality, including verbal, electronic, and written documentation outside of imminent risk.
- Undergraduate degree in a related field and at least five to eight years of experience working in a complex and confidential environment; consideration may also be given to other combinations of education and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of suicide intervention, sexual violence disclosure training, risk assessment, violence prevention, and current trends in early intervention.
- Knowledge of non-disciplinary intervention tools just a restorative justice or transformative justice
- Experience working with diverse populations including but not limited to LGBTQ2S+, Indigenous students, students with disabilities and International students.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the various areas within the University community, its policies and procedures (GFC, Student Conduct Policy, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy, UAPPOL, Residence Community Standards, Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy, Helping Individuals at Risk policy, FOIPPA, etc.).
- Solid understanding of procedural fairness.
- Solid understanding of the effects of trauma on complainants, witnesses and/or respondents.
- Ability to utilize trauma-informed practice in all interactions.
