All University Dining Services (Teraanga Commons Dining hall and Catering Kitchens, Bakery, Oasis Restaurant, Food Court, Baker's Grille, Booster Juice, Loeb, Tunnel Junction Page Break, 2 campus Tim Horton's, 2 Starbucks locations, 2 bridgehead locations and Chattime)The incumbent is responsible for gas, steam and electrical repairs and maintenance for machines and appliances to include but not limited to the following; Industrial dishwashers, convection and conveyor ovens, char broilers, gas ovens, steamers and steam generators, various beverage dispensers, meat slicers, mixers, toasters, plate dispensers, food warmer cabinets, hot line, dessert display, chopper, trolleys, fryers, salad bars, fridges and freezers (mechanical side only), racks, milk dispensers, can openers, steam kettle, tilt fry pans, sandwich sealer, proofer, conveyer belt unit, chaffing equipment, grills and flat tops etc.Qualifications:The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
  • The incumbent must hold at a minimum a class G II Gas Fitters license and relevant experience to be able to correctly troubleshoot and repair/maintain/install gas and safety controls; to understand and utilize gas safety procedures, piping practices and sizing, and the proper venting of all gas equipment; to initiate all proper shut down procedures in case of any gas leaks and venting failures; provide gas equipment load ratings for each location to any TSSA inspectors upon request; ensure that the University equipment is up to TSSA standards and provide upgrades as necessary.
  • This is a unique position within Carleton University and requires the incumbent to work independently and demonstrate initiative by using their knowledge and extensive experience in the field.
  • Quality Control procedures are a requirement for this position to meet or exceed the manufactures' original specifications, and to ensure the safety and ergonomics for the end users.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the electrical lock and tag out procedures ensures the safety of all surrounding people when performing equipment diagnoses and troubleshooting on live electrical circuits.
  • Knowledge of databases will allow the incumbent to keep accurate records of time and materials spent for each piece of equipment; maintain and update an inventory spreadsheet and ensure that key critical parts needed for prompt repairs are kept on hand.
  • Bookkeeping practices permits the incumbent, monthly, to accurately reconcile expenses made and ensure that all charges, freight and duties are cross referenced and billed accordingly to each job invoice.
Education and Experience:The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
  • TSSA certified G II Gas Fitters license usually acquired through a 3-year college program including apprenticeship. Commercial food service industry recognized certification. Completion of several recognized factory training seminars, as well as safety procedures and WHMIS training.
  • Five (5) years' work experience pertaining to the installation, maintenance and repairs on commercial cooking equipment from a recognized certified service company. This experience would include three (3) years of work experience (above apprenticeship) in the gas industry field pertaining to gas piping practices and sizing, ventilation, maintenance and servicing of gas equipment, as well as three years of work experience in electronics troubleshooting and servicing.
  • In addition, this position requires proficiency with current Windows operating systems, including Outlook, Excel spreadsheets, and Access databases.
