Your goal in this position is to work in the capacity as an unregulated care provider. Clinical nursing externs will work in collaboration with a unit nursing team to provide holistic, high quality, and safe care to patients, under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a designated registered nursing professional (Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse) and clinical nursing extern educator. You will practice in a manner consistent with the professional standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario, evidence-based nursing practices and the standards and policies set by North York General Hospital. You will perform assessments and nursing skills delegated by a registered nursing professional that are authorized within the clinical nursing extern scope of practice (vital signs, head-to-toe assessments, etc.) and will not perform or be delegated acts outside of this scope. Your assessments and nursing skills are to be completed under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the delegating nursing professional. You demonstrate excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills. You also demonstrate excellent organizational and time-management skills. You participate as an interprofessional team member. This position supports the hospital's academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families.On a practical level, you will
- Practice under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the assigned Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse on the unit and in a manner consistent with North York General Hospital's policies standards, while taking into account CNO guidance for unregulated care providers.
- Work with unit nurses and clinical nursing extern educators to ensure you have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all expected actions/duties.
- Provide assistance with activities of daily living, mobility, and nutrition for patients as per hospital policy.
- Conduct vital signs, head-to-toe assessments, and nursing tasks for patients as delegated by a registered nursing professional within the clinical extern scope of practice.
- Complete timely and accurate documentation of patient care, vital signs, and assessments.
- Fulfill unit specific responsibilities in accordance with specialty unit expectations (NICU, Pediatric, Post-Partum, Labor and Delivery, ICU, and Mental Health).
- Enhance the patient experience by assisting with comfort measures, patient safety concerns, and therapeutic relationship building.
- Request assistance with assigned duties whenever in need.
- Provide support to other units within your clinical program when floated under coordinator discretion.
- Nursing Students enrolled in their 2nd - 4th year of an accredited baccalaureate program (BScN/BSN), final year of an accelerated baccalaureate program (BScN/BSN), final year of a practical nurse (RPN) program, or internationally educated nurse in a CNO approved program (ie. BSCN-IEN or PN-IEN) to meet the CNO requirements for registration.
- Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing.
- Successful completion of the academic year prior to the last year in a recognized nursing program.
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required.
- Completion of mandatory/required certifications provided via North York General extern orientation, and as defined by unit. (e.g. Fit Test, WHIMS, AODA, IP&C)
- Demonstrated knowledge and competency in appropriate and applicable basic infection prevention and control practices.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred.
- Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement at North York preferred
