The successful Candidate will provide technical leadership and expertise in the dynamic area of Microbiology. Work closely with Management, Quality Specialists and Medical Scientific staff to oversee day-to-day technical operations and participate in continuous improvement of department processes.The Division of Microbiology specializes in the detection, identification, and characterization of infectious agents for all UHN sites. As a valued member of TeamLMP, you will play a key role in providing high-quality microbiology services to clinical, laboratory, and research professionals, supporting timely diagnosis, patient care, and infection prevention across the organization.Duties
- Utilizes practical and theoretical knowledge to perform laboratory procedures as outlined in the procedure manuals for all laboratory disciplines and functions, ensuring the completion of assigned workload.
- Guiding, organizing and distributing workload among assigned technical staff to ensure the efficient operation of the laboratory
- Demonstrating understanding of operational theories/procedures, performance characteristics of instruments/equipment to facilitate the effective and efficient operation of assigned area
- Monitors the inventory management system to ensure the efficient utilization and distribution of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Perform minor updates to procedures
- Participates in communication activities to maintain and continually enhance the co operation and coordination of services provided by assigned laboratory staff
- Participates in professional development, teaching/education activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services
- Maintain the Quality Control system including evaluation and validation. Reviews and signs internal/external quality control documentation, as assigned; follows up on discrepancies in quality control testing and/or calibration reported
- Participates as required in the competent assessments, orientation and training of new employees
- Maintain safe working environment and comply with IPAC
- Attend, participate and facilitate discussions at appropriate departmental meetings, as required.
- Participate in professional development, teaching/education activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services
- Performs cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned and/or required
- Three (3) years recent Microbiology laboratory experience
- Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist program, required
- Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (CMLTO), required
- Demonstrates ability to develop skill and knowledge in all areas of the laboratory (on-the-job experience)
- thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques (on-the-job experience), in assigned area
- Excellent problem recognition and problem solving-skills
- Knowledge of Quality Assurance principles
