Reference # HL-WDE-8784Our client, Westwood Developments, is a diversified real estate organization engaged in commercial and residential land development, construction, acquisitions, and property management. Over the past 30 years, Westwood has developed more than a thousand residential units and continues to lead some of Halifax's most high-profile developments, including The Mills and Richmond Yards, playing a key role in shaping the future of a growing city within the beautiful province of Nova Scotia.We are pleased to partner with Westwood Developments as they look to add a Controller to their growing finance team, based on-site in Halifax, NS.Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with regulatory and accounting standards. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines technical accounting expertise with team leadership and continuous process improvement in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.Responsibilities will include:
- Manage and oversee all accounting and financial functions of the organization, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting across a group of related entities.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective internal controls and financial processes to safeguard assets, mitigate risk, and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and accounting standards.
- Provide leadership and guidance to a small accounting team (4 direct reports), including hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and ongoing development.
- Manage cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting processes, including variance analysis and reporting to senior management.
- Oversee construction-related accounting and shared resource billings within the group of companies, as well as review commercial leasing activity, including CAM reconciliations and tenant recoveries.
- Coordinate audits, reviews, and year-end working papers, and act as a key liaison with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial partners.
- Participate in the development and improvement of financial systems, policies, procedures, and reporting tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Collaborate with operational leaders to provide financial analysis and insights that support informed business and investment decisions.
- Prepare and present financial reports and analysis to senior management as required.
- CPA designation (or near completion).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including people leadership, within a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.
- Strong technical accounting skills, with a solid understanding of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
- Hands-on experience with full-cycle accounting and month-end close processes, including reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and maintaining effective internal controls.
- Proven ability to lead, develop, and manage small teams with a focus on accountability and continuous improvement.
- Experience in real estate, construction, or property management accounting considered a strong asset.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems; experience with property management software is an asset.
