Postmedia is proud to participate in Canada's 'Local Journalism Initiative' (LJI) program. This program supports local civic journalism covering the diverse needs of underserved communities across the country.The London Free Press is seeking a multi-media journalist to cover civic institutions and other news in the immediate area around London. Based out of The Free Press, and funded by News Media Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative, this role provides the opportunity to cover the issues that matter to the communities around London. From farm families to ex-urbanites looking for a bigger bang for their housing buck, to retirees and cottagers and, increasingly, emigres from the Greater Toronto, their stories are often not told. With an emphasis on civic policy-making such as at municipal councils and the courts in this fast-growing region, the LJI reporter will be expected to find new ways to tell stories and engage readers, filing for multiple platforms.What you’ll do:
  • Report and write stories for print, web and mobile audiences, meeting readers where they are, and tailor content to meet the varying needs of those platforms.
  • Initiate and develop ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
  • Cultivate sources and establish expertise to break stories and set the news agenda.
  • File photo and video clips for digital platforms.
  • Work with digital teams to create interactive reader content, searchable databases and other elements.
Who you are:
  • You have excellent news judgment, with demonstrable strengths in accurate, clean reporting.
  • Proven ability to initiate stories and enterprise features, with excellent reporting and writing skills.
  • Experience at a news organization in a deadline-oriented reporting/writing role.
  • Flexible to write effectively in breaking news, features and short form, a job essential, along with non-traditional story formats such as explainers and Q/As
  • Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help the room.
  • A digger, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent for explanatory journalism to help engage readers.
  • A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
  • Strength in data analysis and the ability to effectively mine social media, to stay abreast of reader interests in the moment and beyond, are core assets.
  • You have experience and strength in video or podcast presentation, along with the ability to shoot photos and video with a smartphone.
  • A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
