- Performing environmental laboratory work to characterize solid and aqueous samples for contaminant hydrogeology and groundwater remediation projects:
- Conducting experiments and generating data with minimal supervision.
- Processing and analyzing samples for parameters such as pH, Eh, and conductivity.
- Carrying out radiological processing and analyzing environmental samples for carbon‑14, tritium, alpha, beta, gamma, and other required radiological parameters.
- Performing environmental fieldwork in support of various programs:
- Collecting environmental samples for radiological and non‑radiological analyses.
- Conducting sampling to support monitoring of Chalk River Laboratories (CRL’s) groundwater treatment systems.
- Operating and maintaining field equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintaining laboratory and field records:
- Keeping accurate, neat, and detailed laboratory and field notes.
- Maintaining quality assurance & control (QA/QC) records in accordance with established procedures.
- Managing laboratory records by updating and creating spreadsheets/databases, and preparing graphs, figures, and tables.
- Supporting communication and training:
- Contributing to written reports and memorandums summarizing research findings.
- Mentoring junior technologists and co‑op students.
- Collaborating with technologists and scientists across the branch and organization, building and fostering strong working relationships.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
- Education
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Environmental Technology, Applied Geosciences)
- Higher post-secondary education (e.g. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geoscience, Geology) would be an asset.
- Experience
- A minimum of 2 - 3 years of experience in a relevant field.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proven skills in environmental fieldwork and environmental sample collection.
- Knowledge of field and laboratory analyses of sediment and water samples for environmental parameters.
- Proven laboratory skills, including chemical preparation and analyses.
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to safe environmental laboratory and fieldwork practices.
- Excellent communication skills and a strong attention to detail, particularly in keeping records of field and laboratory data, and data QA/QC.
- Expertise in non-radiological chemical analysis and routine chemical laboratory methods such as pH, ORP, and conductivity measurements, titrations, use of analytical balances, etc.
- Ability and willingness to perform field work in outdoor settings year-round, on-site and across Canada.
- Ability to wear site-specific personal protective equipment such as a hard hat, steel-toed boots, respirator and hearing protection as needed.
- A valid Class G Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of the nuclear industry and radiation protection is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of groundwater treatment systems would be an asset.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status, which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
- Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
- This position is part of the USW 1568 Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in their Collective Agreement. - Outdoor work will be required under varying weather conditions and could involve moderate to high physical effort.
