Research Associates:Under the general direction of, and in collaboration with researchers and faculty members, positions at this level apply extensive knowledge in their field to perform high-level, complex research activities, and will normally hold a Master’s degree. Individuals with training beyond a Master’s degree who have limited experience may also be appointed into this classification level.Position Overview:The Research Associate will assist in the creation and publication of Ishkodens: Northern Ontario and Manitoba Dictionary Project, with the main objective being working towards a robust online dictionary with playable audio files for entries, associated forms of words, and example sentences. The Research Associate will help in the creation of audio and visual records of Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe Language) to document the use of Anishinaabemowin in various contexts in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario by first language speakers, using recording equipment and elicitation techniques. Recordings and notes are then organized and stored. Analysis of the various aspects of the grammar (morphology, syntax, phonetics etc.) will then emerge as these recordings are transcribed and translated, potentially with the language speaker’s input. Further reports, presentations, word lists, books, could result from data collection and analysis. A good understanding of Anishinaabemowin as it is spoken and written, as well as grammar, is necessary.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement data collection protocols, and standards.
  • Determine the appropriate methodology to carry out identified research goals.
  • Recruit research participants.
  • Conduct high-level and complex academic research and literature searches.
  • Collect and manage research data, conduct advanced analysis of research results and document findings.
  • Interpret research findings and perform editorial tasks.
  • Present project status and findings to stakeholders.
  • Organize and host seminars, focus groups, community meetings, special events, and other forms of public engagement.
  • Identify and assist in securing funding opportunities; prepare and submit documentations required by funding agencies.
  • Support project procurement and staff supervision.
  • Contribute to overall activities and internal operations related to the research project.
  • Perform other duties, including administrative support, as required or assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Indigenous Studies, Language Studies, Education, Anthropology, Linguistics, History, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations and communities in language, historical, or cultural fields.
  • Previous experience working in a university, research, or educational setting is an asset.
  • Experience studying or working in Anishinaabe learning environments is an asset.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, collaborative, and interprofessional skills, and the ability to communicate effectively and build collegial relationships with other team members.?
  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively with Indigenous Elders, language teachers, and community members.
  • Proficiency with office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Excel).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Anishinaabemowin.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.?

  • Must be innovative and show initiative.??
  • Able to work flexible hours on an infrequent basis.
